Study finds link between fasting serum glucose levels and in-hospital mortality in elderly non-diabetic patients

A two-country hospital study of 808 elderly patients found a strong association between high, undiagnosed blood glucose in non-diabetic patients and increased hospital death rates, according to the March issue of IJCP, the International Journal of Clinical Practice.

Excess weight contributes to higher risk of death in Asians

A study of more than 1 million Asians found that those who were a normal weight were far less likely to die from any cause than individuals whose body-mass index (BMI) was too high or low. A similar association was seen between BMI and the risk of death from cancer, cardiovascular disease or other causes.

Japan MHLW approves Sosei's NorLevo emergency contraceptive pill

Sosei Group Corporation, the biopharmaceutical company, today announced that Sosei Co., Ltd., its wholly owned Japanese subsidiary, was granted approval for its emergency contraceptive pill, NorLevo(R) TABLETS 0.75mg, by the Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). Higher intake of vitamin D may reduce breast cancer risk

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha have reported that markedly higher intake of vitamin D is needed to reach blood levels that can prevent or markedly cut the incidence of breast cancer and several other major diseases than had been originally thought. The findings are published February 21 in the journal Anticancer Research.
