Mutated TDP-43 can cause neurons to die: Study

Lou Gehrig's disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and frontotemporal lobar degeneration are characterized by protein clumps in brain and spinal-cord cells that include an RNA-binding protein called TDP-43. This protein is the major building block of the lesions formed by these clumps.

FDA awards supplemental approval to support efficacy of ACTEMRA in treating RA

Genentech, Inc., a member of the Roche Group, today announced that the United States Food and Drug Administration has extended the ACTEMRA (tocilizumab, RoACTEMRA in the European Union) label to include inhibition and slowing of structural joint damage, improvement of physical function, and achievement of major clinical response in adult patients with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis, when given in combination with methotrexate.

Researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine have created a new and exciting mouse model to study how lipid sensing and metabolism in the brain relate to the regulation of energy balance and body weight. Researchers create model that predicts drug effects on fetal development

When pregnant women need medications, there is often concern about possible effects on the fetus. Although some drugs are clearly recognized to cause birth defects, and others are generally recognized as safe, surprisingly little is known about most drugs' level of risk. Researchers in the Children's Hospital Boston Informatics Program have created a preclinical model for predicting a drug's teratogenicity based on characterizing the genes that it targets.

Alnylam presents ALN-VSP Phase I trial results for liver cancer

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, a leading RNAi therapeutics company, today presented new clinical data from its ALN-VSP Phase I liver cancer trial in a presentation at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Single cancer cell could be detected in future using new test

Soon scientists will be able to detect a single cancer cell among the billions of cells that circulate in the human bloodstream. The method could detect whether the therapy has worked or even show which therapy would work best. The test depends on circulating tumor cells (CTCs) or cancer cells that have detached from the main tumor and are traveling to other parts of the body.

Isis commences ISIS-EIF4ERx Phase 2 studies in non-small cell lung cancer and prostate cancer

Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced the initiation of two Phase 2 studies of ISIS-EIF4ERx in patients with non-small cell lung cancer and prostate cancer. These studies are part of Isis' broad Phase 2 development program designed to evaluate ISIS-EIF4ERx in multiple types of cancer. ISIS-EIF4ERx targets eukaryotic initiation factor-4E (eIF-4E), a traditionally "undruggable" target that is thought to promote tumor growth and metastasis in many cancers.
