High blood pressure affects approximately one in three adults in the Americas, Europe, some Asian countries and Australia, and one billion people worldwide. Because of this epidemic, The American Society of Hypertension, Inc. and the International Society of Hypertension are pleased to announce the creation of first-of-their-kind guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of Hypertension: "Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Hypertension in the Community."

SynCardia Systems raises $14M to fund the rapid growth of Total Artificial Heart

Privately held SynCardia Systems, Inc. announced today that it had raised $14 million to fund the rapid growth of the only approved medical device that eliminates the symptoms and source of end-stage heart failure, the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart. The SynCardia Total Artificial Heart is the world's first and only FDA, Health Canada and CE (Europe) approved Total Artificial Heart.

Ipsen reports positive initial results from Dysport phase III study in Adult Upper Limb spasticity

Ipsen today announced positive initial results from the double-blind phase III study of Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) in Adult Upper Limb spasticity. Regarding the primary endpoints, treatment with Dysport showed statistically significant response versus placebo in the improvement of muscle tone, as measured by the Modified Ashworth Scale.

Norgine signs exclusive licensing agreement with Innovacell for ICEF15

Norgine B.V. and Innovacell today announced they have entered into an exclusive licensing agreement for Europe, SADAC and MENA for ICEF15. Innovacell and Norgine will co-develop ICEF15 and Norgine will commercialise the product. The start of the ICEF15 phase IIb clinical trial is imminent and it is anticipated that the first patient will be dosed in Q1 2014.

The White House is claiming that the Healthcare.gov website is mostly fixed, that the millions of Americans whose health plans were canceled thanks to government rules may be able to keep them for another year, and that in any event these people will get better plans through ObamaCare exchanges. Whatever the truth of these assertions, those who expect better days ahead for the Affordable Care Act are in for a rude awakening. The shocks - economic and political - will get much worse next year and beyond (Michael J. Boskin, 12/15).

Poland's entry into the EU may have had the surprising consequence of increasing allergies in rural villages, according to a new study. Surveys show that the prevalence of atopy, a predisposition towards allergic reactions, jumped from seven per cent to 20 per cent in villages in southwest Poland between 2003 and 2012.

Taxing sugar-sweetened beverages is likely to decrease consumption, resulting in lower rates of diabetes and heart disease, and these health benefits are expected to be greatest for the low-income, Hispanic and African-American Californians who are at highest risk of diabetes, according to a new analysis led by researchers at UC San Francisco.

Gov. Robert F. McDonnell will propose a two-year state budget Monday that calls for boosting K-12 education funding by nearly $600 million and pouring millions more into higher education, mental health services, water-quality improvements and homelessness-prevention programs. ... The [incoming governor, Democrat Terry McAuliffe] hopes to change it profoundly by adding language to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, which state House Republicans say won't get by them (Vozzella, 12/15).
