Janssen seeks European marketing approval for combination of once-daily darunavir with cobicistat

Janssen-Cilag International NV, today announced it has submitted a Marketing Authorisation Application to the European Medicines Agency seeking approval for a once-daily single tablet fixed-dose antiretroviral combination product containing darunavir, a protease inhibitor developed by Janssen, with cobicistat, a pharmacokinetic enhancer or boosting agent, developed by Gilead Sciences, Inc. for use in combination with other human immunodeficiency virus medicines.

The encouraging view is that the overwhelming number of visitors to the site indicates high demand for insurance in the new system. That's critical, because the more people who participate, the better the system works. The danger is that the technical foibles since Oct. 1 will discourage people from coming back, particularly the young and healthy customers the system needs to keep rates reasonable. With some big deadlines approaching, the Obama administration needs to fix the bugs, and fast. People who need insurance from the federal marketplace have until mid-December to buy coverage that begins Jan. 1. If enrollment figures aren't robust by then, the new health-care system will have a problem even bigger than a frustrating Web (10/11).

Results announced for Phase II PRECEDENT trial of vintafolide for treatment of platinum-resistant ovarian cancer

Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, (NYSE: MRK) and Endocyte, Inc. (NASDAQ: ECYT) today announced the online publication of results from the randomized Phase II PRECEDENT trial for vintafolide (MK-8109/EC145), an investigational folate small molecule drug conjugate (SMDC), in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO), the official journal of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Children who receive solid-organ transplants have risk of developing advanced kidney disease

Children who undergo transplants of solid organs have a high risk of developing advanced kidney disease, according to a new national study. Among these children, the highest risk is in those receiving lung or intestinal transplants, followed by heart and then liver transplants. The researchers say their findings reinforce the importance of continued screening of kidney function in pediatric transplant recipients.

CNIO researchers perform first exome sequencing for non-infiltrating bladder cancer

Bladder cancer represents a serious public health problem in many countries, especially in Spain, where 11,200 new cases are recorded every year, one of the highest rates in the world. The majority of these tumours have a good prognosis -- 70-80% five-year survival after diagnosis -- and they do not infiltrate the bladder muscle at the time of diagnosis -- in around 80% of cases.
