Exposure to BPA may increase risk of asthma in young children

Researchers at the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health at the Mailman School of Public Health are the first to report an association between early childhood exposure to the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) and an elevated risk for asthma in young children. BPA is a component of some plastics and is found in food can liners and store receipts.

National Birth Defects Prevention Network honors BU researcher with Godfrey P. Oakley, Jr., Award

Allen A. Mitchell, MD, a professor of public health (epidemiology) and professor of pediatrics at the Boston University Schools of Public Health and Medicine, recently received the Godfrey P. Oakley, Jr., Award at the annual meeting of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network. Mitchell, who is also the director of Boston University's Slone Epidemiology Center (SEC), was recognized for his significant lifetime contributions to the field of birth defects.

Taiho Pharmaceutical seeks Japanese approval for TAS-102 to treat colorectal cancer

Taiho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. announced on February 27 that it submitted an application on February 26 for approval of the manufacture and marketing of the novel oral nucleoside antitumor agent TAS-102 (combination of trifluorothymidine (FTD) and tipiracil hydrochloride (TPI)) to the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Researchers to present new results for Merck's allergy immunotherapy tablets at AAAAI meeting

Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, today announced that researchers will present new data analyses of the safety and efficacy of the company's investigational allergy immunotherapy tablets (AITs) for ragweed pollen (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) and grass pollen (Phleum pratense) at the 2013 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) Annual Meeting.

Omalizumab fast, safe and well-tolerated in teens and adults with chronic spontaneous urticaria

An international team of researchers has found that a once-a-month, high-dose injection of a commonly used asthma drug is highly effective in treating teens and adults chronically afflicted with hives and severe, itchy rash. The drug, omalizumab, was tested on 323 people at 55 medical centers for whom standard antihistamine therapy failed to quell their underlying, allergy-like reaction, known as chronic idiopathic urticaria or chronic spontaneous urticaria.
