Omega fourth quarter net income decreases to $5.0 million

Omega Healthcare Investors, Inc. today announced its results of operations for the quarter and fiscal year ended December 31, 2010. The Company also reported Funds From Operations ("FFO") available to common stockholders for the three months ended December 31, 2010 of $28.4 million or $0.29 per common share.

Molecular explanation to higher tendency for autism among males

George Washington University researcher, Dr. Valerie Hu, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and her team at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, have found that male and female sex hormones regulate expression of an important gene in neuronal cell culture through a mechanism that could explain not only higher levels of testosterone observed in some individuals with autism, but also why males have a higher incidence of autism than females.

A high proportion of patients with high blood pressure are failing to take their medication properly and would benefit clinically from a course of 'adherence therapy', according to new research from the University of East Anglia.

U.S. Patent Office issues notification of allowance to AirPal's inflatable patient positioning system

AirPal, a medical device manufacturer headquartered in North Wales, Pennsylvania, has received notification of allowance from the U.S. Patent Office for its modular system of inflatable devices used to position patients for situations such as difficult airway management, laryngoscopies, diagnostic exams, surgeries, and related procedures.

NYU Langone one of 16 centers chosen to participate in American Joint Replacement Registry

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center has been chosen as one of only 16 centers across the country to participate in the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR). The AJRR is a national, independent, not-for-profit organization created to collect key joint replacement and revision data in order to better to monitor device performance and identify underperforming processes while providing information supporting best practices in safety, cost control and advances in technology.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital partners with CeaseFire to prevent violence in Chicago

Northwestern Memorial Hospital's emergency department treats approximately 1,000 traumas annually, one third of which are related to shooting or stabbing incidents. In response, Northwestern Memorial has become a CeaseFire site and has staffed its emergency department with violence interrupters who are specially trained to intervene and minimize the risk of retaliation or repeat injury following a violent incident.

Over 20% of young children with respiratory viral infections will develop middle ear infections

More than 20 percent of young children with colds or other respiratory viral infections will develop middle ear infections of varying severity—including some mild infections that don't require antibiotics, according to a study in the February issue of The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.

Study finds worse outcomes in workers undergoing spinal fusion surgery

For workers' compensation patients with chronic low back pain, spinal fusion surgery leads to worse long-term outcomes—including a lower rate of return to work—compared to nonsurgical treatment, suggests a study in the February 15th issue of Spine. AML patient raises awareness in community about national stem cell registry

Roundup: States grapple with high health costs, Medicaid squeeze

Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill would give his administration sweeping powers to reshape state health programs covering more than 1 million state residents. Under the bill, the administration's rewrite of the Medicaid program would be reviewed only by the Legislature's budget committee, which has a broader margin of control for majority Republican lawmakers than any other legislative committee.

Hearing loss linked to dementia & Alzheimer’s: Study

New research suggests that adults with hearing loss may face a higher risk of dementia and perhaps Alzheimer’s disease than those who do not suffer hearing loss. The risk of dementia rises with greater loss of hearing say researchers. The study appears in the February issue of the journal Archives of Neurology.
