The general tendency noted in the study — that many patients and doctors think more medical care is always better — has implications for the new health overhaul law.

Low-skilled workers to perform initial blood donor screening: ONA, CFNU question decision

The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) has joined the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) in questioning the decision of federal health minister Leona Aglukkaq to allow Canadian Blood Services to conduct a pilot project to replaces nurses with low-skilled workers for initial blood donor screening.

Sitting down during hospital room visits induces perception of having stayed longer

Sitting down on the job has its advantages. New data from The University of Kansas Hospital finds that patients perceive doctors who sit down during their hospital room visits stay longer than doctors who stand during the visit – even when doctors who sit don't stay as long as doctors who stand.

Parents fail to warn children about sexual abuse perpetrated by relatives and known individuals

Despite evidence to the contrary, parents who talk to their children about sexual abuse incorrectly identify strangers as the most likely source of abuse, according to a team of researchers led by Esther Deblinger, PhD, co-director of the CARES (Child Abuse Research Education and Services) Institute at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey(UMDNJ)-School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Global Summit on Nurse Faculty Migration to identify solutions for shortage of nurse faculty

The global nursing shortage is due in part to a lack of faculty in nursing schools and to a phenomenon known as nurse migration, where nurses leave their country of origin to work elsewhere. In response, the International Council of Nurses and the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, supported by The Elsevier Foundation, will conduct the Global Summit on Nurse Faculty Migration-a meeting of nurse experts who will examine the problem, and identify realistic and measurable solutions.

Researchers at Banner Sun Health Research Institute are about to start the first Phase 2 research study to test a gene transfer agent for Alzheimer's disease. AD is a degenerative and ultimately fatal disorder affecting as many as five million Americans and that number is expected to soar to more than 11 million by 2040.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common mental health disorders affecting children and adolescents. Children with ADHD are excessively restless, impulsive, and distractible and experience difficulties at home and in school. Problems inhibiting behavior are a common theme for ADHD symptoms.
