Porter Adventist Hospital receives certification as Advanced Primary Stroke Center

Porter Adventist Hospital has received certification as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The Certificate of Distinction, received in December after an on-site review in the fall, recognizes the exceptional efforts the Porter Stroke Program has made with a cohesive, multidisciplinary approach to foster better outcomes for stroke patients.

Gentiva Health Services sells respiratory/HME and infusion therapy businesses to Lincare Holdings subsidiary

Gentiva Health Services, Inc., a leading provider of comprehensive home health services, announced today that it has sold its businesses providing respiratory therapy and home medical equipment, and infusion therapy to a subsidiary of Lincare Holdings Inc. in an all-cash transaction. Terms were not disclosed.

UCSF studies show relationship between Alzheimer's disease and smoking

A UCSF analysis of published studies on the relationship between Alzheimer's disease and smoking indicates that smoking cigarettes is a significant risk factor for the disease. After controlling for study design, quality of the journals, time of publication, and tobacco industry affiliation of the authors, the UCSF research team also found an association between tobacco industry affiliation and the conclusions of individual studies.

Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA), representing more than 1,500 registered nurses at Sacred Heart Medical Center, held an informational picket today to highlight issues critical to patient safety. Contract negotiations have stalled over several key issues including the ability to take uninterrupted rest breaks, inadequate nurse staffing levels, and changes to retirement benefits.

MV vaccine prevents TB in people with HIV infection

Results from clinical trials conducted in Tanzania show that a new vaccine against tuberculosis, Mycobacterium vaccae (MV), is effective in preventing tuberculosis in people with HIV infection. Findings from the trials, which were conducted by investigators from Dartmouth Medical School in the United States, will be published in the next issue of AIDS, the leading journal in the field of HIV and AIDS research.
