New survey concludes health care reform debate as a cause of stress and annoyance among Americans

A new survey released today from Misericordia University and Braun Research finds that two in five Americans plan to spend less this holiday season as a result of rising health care costs. The survey also concluded that the health care reform debate is a cause of stress and annoyance among the majority of Americans and three in ten say health care costs have led to arguments and tension with friends and family members.

African American and Hispanic adults smoking menthol cigarettes less likely to quit smoking, says study

African American and Hispanic adults who smoke menthol cigarettes may be less likely to quit smoking than those who smoke regular cigarettes, a new study by researchers at the UMDNJ-School of Public Health has found. The report, published in the December issue of Preventive Medicine, is believed to be the first to use national statistics to examine the association between menthol cigarettes and smoking cessation among adults.

Multicenter study evaluates effectiveness of therapeutic hypothermia in reducing brain injury in children

When the heart is stopped and restarted, the patient's life may be saved but their brain is often permanently damaged. Therapeutic hypothermia, a treatment in which the patient's body temperature is lowered and maintained several degrees below normal for a period of time, has been shown to mitigate these harmful effects and improve survival in adults.

Most of the fatal falls in the home can be avoided with fall prevention and protection products

Healthcare costs are rapidly increasing due to the rapid aging of our population. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that over 60% of fatal falls occur in the home. Additionally, the total cost of falls in 2010 is expected to be between 68 and 100 Billion Dollars. More than 25,000 older adults died due to falls last year.

FAU professor highlights the need for extensive randomized trials to distinguish drug benefits

In a commentary published in the December 2, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Charles H. Hennekens, M.D., the first Sir Richard Doll Research Professor in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science at Florida Atlantic University, said, "To detect the most likely small to moderate benefits or harm of drugs requires randomized trials of sufficient size and duration. Overreliance on small trials, meta-analyses or subgroup analyses can lead to misleading conclusions."

The worldwide safety experience of endoscopist-administered propofol sedation now exceeds 600,000 patients. The low rate of serious adverse events underscores the safety of nonanesthesiologist-administered propofol (NAAP) for gastrointestinal (GI) procedures, provided that it is administered by a team of individuals who have received training specific to the administration of propofol according to the "Position statement: nonanesthesiologist administration of propofol for GI endoscopy" issued by the four major gastroenterology and hepatology societies.

The Ensign Group, Inc., announced today that it has acquired three Texas skilled nursing facilities: the 93-bed Grand Terrace Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in McAllen, the 100-bed Alta Vista Rehabilitation & Healthcare in Brownsville; and the 95-bed Veranda Rehabilitation & Healthcare in Harlingen. Adult stem cells may help repair heart tissue damaged by heart attack according to the findings of a new study to be published in the December 8 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Results from the Phase I study show stem cells from donor bone marrow appear to help heart attack patients recover better by growing new blood vessels to bring more oxygen to the heart

Many people rely on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines as a safe and effective treatment for sleep apnea. But a new case report describes a rare complication—a lingering inflammatory disease of the lungs, apparently related to the use of contaminated well water in a CPAP machine. The report appears in the December Southern Medical Journal, official journal of the Southern Medical Association.
