Spinal implant developed by Sanfor Clinic neurosurgeon receives FDA market clearance

Sanford Health, a comprehensive health care provider in the Upper Midwest, announced today a spinal implant developed by Sanford Clinic Neurosurgeon, Wilson Asfora, MD, Sanford Clinic Neurosurgery & Spine, has received United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) market clearance as a lumbar intervertebral body fusion device.

Study reveals that downregulation of IRF-8 gene causes gum diseases, arthritis and osteoporosis

Investigators at Hospital for Special Surgery, collaborating with researchers from other institutions, have contributed to the discovery that a gene called interferon regulator factor-8 (IRF-8) is involved in the development of diseases such as periodontitis (gum disease), rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. The study, which will be published online August 30, ahead of print, in the journal Nature Medicine, could lead to new treatments in the future.

New contract agreement reached between Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Packard Children’s hospital and the SEIU-UHW union

Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and Stanford Hospital & Clinics announce that the hospitals have reached a new contract agreement with employees represented by the SEIU United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) union. The SEIU-UHW membership, which represents 1,450 out of 9,172 employees at the hospitals in jobs such as housekeeping, food service, nursing assistants, and technicians, ratified the contract in a vote Thursday, August 27.

Reduction in the registered nurse workforce detrimental to healthcare quality

The College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) is seriously concerned that further cuts to the registered nurse workforce will put patient safety and quality of care at risk. Earlier this week, Alberta Health Services announced plans to cut staff by enticing nurses and other professionals into early retirement in order to address the health system's budget deficit.

Reference guide to assist grievers during the first hours and days following a sudden and unexpected death

The number of immediate considerations following the death of loved one can be daunting, but the aftermath of an unexpected death can be especially traumatic for grievers. In partnership with the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, Caring Connections: A Hope and Comfort in Grief Program of the U. College of Nursing has released a reference guide to assist grievers during those first hours and days following a sudden and unexpected death.

Study reveals that the pending health reforms bill will affect senior citizens in Wyoming

A new American Health Care Association analysis of the pending House health reform bill, combined with the impact of a recently-enacted Medicare regulation cutting Medicare-funded nursing home care by $12 billion over ten years, finds seniors in Wyoming requiring nursing and rehabilitative care will face total funding cuts of nearly $60 million over that same time period. Nationally, the study finds, seniors’ Medicare cuts will total $44 billion over ten years, prompting Wyoming’s long term care community to warn that seniors’ care needs are endangered by the House bill, as are the jobs of caregivers and nursing home staff in Wyoming.

American Health Care Association (AHCA): State-by-State Medicare Cuts to Nursing Homes -- "A new [AHCA] analysis of the pending House health reform bill [HR 3200], combined with the impact of a recently-enacted Medicare regulation cutting Medicare-funded nursing home care by $12 billion over ten years, finds seniors in fifteen states requiring nursing and rehabilitative care will face total funding cuts in excess of $1 billion over that same time period," according to an AHCA description of the study. "The assessment was based on the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score of both HR 3200 and the recent CMS funding rule, along with Medicare Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) utilization data." A breakdown of each of the 15 states facing ten-year billion dollar cuts to Medicare-funded nursing homes is available online (8/20).
