FDA grants fast track designation for Aastrom's CLI cell therapy development program

Aastrom Biosciences, Inc., a leading developer of expanded autologous cellular therapies for the treatment of severe cardiovascular diseases, today announced that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has granted fast track designation for the company's critical limb ischemia (CLI) cell therapy development program. Aastrom plans to initiate Phase 3 clinical testing of its treatment for CLI in early 2011.

EC grants orphan drug designation to S*BIO's SB1518 for treatment of myelofibrosis

S*BIO Pte Ltd today announced that the European Commission (EC) has granted orphan drug designation to SB1518, its potent and orally active JAK2 inhibitor for the treatment of primary myelofibrosis (PMF), post-polycythemia vera myelofibrosis (PPV-MF) and post-essential thrombocythemia myelofibrosis (PET-MF). SB1518 has also received orphan drug designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of the same disorder.

The babies, twin girls born in Germany in June and a singleton boy born in Italy in September, are the first deliveries in a pilot study of comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH) by microarray, a new method of screening oocytes for IVF for a full range of chromosomal disorders.

Pericytes regulate blood-brain barrier

While the blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain from harmful chemicals occurring naturally in the blood, it also obstructs the transport of drugs to the brain. In an article in Nature scientists at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet now present a potential solution to the problem. The key to the BBB is a cell-type in the blood vessel walls called pericytes, and the researchers hope that their findings will one day contribute to new therapies for diseases like Alzheimer's and stroke.
