A mutation that enhances the function of a specific ion channel has been identified as the cause of a rare inherited pain disorder. The research, published by Cell Press in the June 10 issue of the journal Neuron, proposes a potential treatment for the disorder and may lead to a better understanding of chronic pain in humans.

New information to help patients make important decision regarding stem cell treatments

Patients hoping to learn more about the credibility of clinics selling stem cell treatments abroad will soon have new information to help them make important and often costly decisions regarding their health. A report released today by the Task Force on Unproven Stem Cell Treatments, convened by the International Society for Stem Cell Research outlines criteria by which people can evaluate the claims made by the hundreds of so-called "rogue" clinics operating across the globe.

This new discovery, published online in The FASEB Journal, explains how antioxidants in red wine and green tea produce a combined effect to disrupt an important cell signaling pathway necessary for prostate cancer growth.

Abnormalities in the process of blood clot formation contribute to pathogenesis of AD: Research

New research suggests that abnormalities in the process of blood clot formation may contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. The study, published by Cell Press in the June 10 issue of the journal Neuron, advances our understanding of the link between vascular pathology and AD and proposes a new therapeutic strategy aimed at slowing cognitive decline.

Combination therapy appears to improve outcome of women with late-stage ovarian cancer

The combination of decitabine and carboplatin appears to improve the outcome of women who have late-stage ovarian cancer. In an upcoming issue of the journal Cancer (online today), Indiana University researchers report four of 10 patients who participated in a phase I clinical trial had no disease progression after six months of treatment. One patient experienced complete resolution of tumor tissue for a period of time.

GE Healthcare presents interim phase 2 study results of fluciclatide

GE Healthcare, a unit of the General Electric Company, today presented interim phase 2 study results of fluciclatide, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, a federal research agency and part of the National Institutes of Health. Fluciclatide is an integrin-targeted radiopharmaceutical under development for oncology PET imaging.

Microscopic polymer fibers for rebuilding human tissue, speeding healing process

Queen's University Brian Amsden is hoping that in about 10 years a tendon, spinal cord or heart valve will be able to regenerate itself after an injury or disease. The chemical engineering professor, along with scientists from the University of Western Ontario and University of Toronto, is currently trying to develop microscopic polymer fibers to help rebuild human tissue and speed the healing process.

New report compares U.S. and European funding for research related to synthetic biology

A new analysis by the Synthetic Biology Project at the Woodrow Wilson Center found that the U.S. government has spent around $430 million on research related to synthetic biology since 2005, with the Department of Energy funding a majority of the research. By comparison, the analysis indicated that the European Union and three individual European countries – the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Germany – had spent approximately $160 million during that same period.

Some commonly used drugs cause bone loss: New research

New research helps to explain why some commonly used drugs come with a serious downside: They up your odds of breaking a bone. The drugs in question, glucocorticoids (e.g. cortisone and prednisone) and the insulin sensitizer rosiglitazone work through entirely different mechanisms as therapies for inflammatory diseases and diabetes respectively, and two studies in the June issue of Cell Metabolism now show that they lead to bone loss in different ways too.

Pecans may delay progression of age-related motor neuron degeneration: Study

Eating about a handful of pecans each day may play a role in protecting the nervous system, according to a new animal study published in the current issue of Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research. The study, conducted at the Center for Cellular Neurobiology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, suggests adding pecans to your diet may delay the progression of age-related motor neuron degeneration. This may include diseases like amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
