Researchers discover gene mutations in autistic, mentally impaired patients

Researchers working with Professor Gudrun Rappold, Director of the Department of Molecular Human Genetics at Heidelberg University Hospital, have discovered previously unknown mutations in autistic and mentally impaired patients in what is known as the SHANK2 gene, a gene that is partially responsible for linking nerve cells.

CorCell reduces initial cost of storing umbilical cord blood stem cells

Cord Blood America, Inc., announced today its stem cell processing and storage subsidiary, CorCell, is launching "Afford-A-Cord," which reduces the initial cost of storing umbilical cord blood stem cells from $2075 to $495 plus medical courier service. The Afford-A-Cord program will be offered as an additional payment option to CorCell's long standing traditional payment programs.

Lyophilized heparin demonstrates better ability to preserve cord blood stem cells than CPD: Study

Lyophilized heparin, a proprietary anticoagulant developed specifically for cord blood collection, demonstrated a better ability to preserve the number of viable cells over a longer period of time than a commonly-used anticoagulant, citrate phosphate dextrose, according to a study presented today at the International Society for Cellular Therapy Annual Meeting.

6-month results of NovoStent's SAMBA trial for atherosclerotic disease in SFA and popliteal arteries

NovoStent Corporation, a privately held medical device company, today announced the 6-month follow-up results of the company's European clinical trial evaluating the use of its SAMBA Stent and Delivery System in the treatment of superficial femoral and popliteal artery disease. The SAMBA Stent was designed to treat the highly varied presentation of atherosclerotic disease in the superficial femoral (SFA) and popliteal arteries by providing a unique combination of increased vessel coverage, strength and flexibility.

UCSF scientists discover new stem cell in developing human brain

UCSF scientists have discovered a new stem cell in the developing human brain. The cell produces nerve cells that help form the neocortex - the site of higher cognitive function -- and likely accounts for the dramatic expansion of the region in the lineages that lead to man, the researchers say.

Researchers describe carcinogenic effects of EDCs

Longtime environmental health researchers at Tufts University School of Medicine describe the carcinogenic effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, ubiquitous chemicals that have hormone-like effects in the body. In a review article published online May 25 in Nature Reviews Endocrinology, the researchers express the need for more complex strategies for studying how these chemicals affect health but report that ample evidence already supports changing public health and environmental policies to protect the public from exposure to EDCs.

Increasing levels of GGA3 protein prevent accumulation of enzyme linked to Alzheimer's disease

Researchers at Tufts University School of Medicine have zeroed in on a protein that may play a role in the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The team found that increasing levels of the protein (called GGA3) prevented the accumulation of an enzyme linked to Alzheimer's. The strategy may lead to new treatments for the neurodegenerative disease.

When CT results suggest appendicitis, but a patient's symptoms are inconsistent with the acute condition, physicians should consider a diagnosis of chronic or recurrent appendicitis and surgical treatment, according to a new study published in the online edition and July printed issue of the journal Radiology.

Researchers study how hematopoietic cells react when Epo levels increase

Our body reacts to blood loss by stimulating the production of red blood cells (erythrocytes). The cells of the hematopoietic (blood-forming) system in the bone marrow do so upon receipt of a signal by a hormone called erythropoietin, or Epo for short. This hormone is produced mainly by the kidney that increases the Epo level by up to a thousand-fold as a response to falling oxygen saturation of the blood.
