CompuMed signs agreement with Lincoln High School Learning Centers

CompuMed, Inc., a telemedicine and medical informatics company, has entered into an agreement with the San Diego Unified School District's Lincoln High School Learning Centers to provide CompuMed's CardioGramKids electrocardiogram telemedicine technologies and services to the four schools that comprise the Lincoln High Learning Centers: the Lincoln High Schools of Public Safety, Science & Engineering, Arts and Social Justice.

USDA to facilitate virtual public discussion on power of telemedicine

Agriculture Under Secretary for Rural Development Dallas Tonsager announced late last week that the USDA will facilitate a virtual public discussion in the field of telemedicine. "The Power of Telemedicine" web discussion is an extension of the USDA's Open Government effort and Rural Development's latest effort to encourage a more widespread use and understanding of telemedicine.

According to the American Heart Association, the total direct and indirect costs of stroke in 2008 have been estimated at $65.5 billion.

Public, private efforts to boost health IT connectivity

First, Computerworld reports, "Verizon announced on Wednesday a new cloud-based service offering for healthcare providers that will handle the sharing of patient information electronically between disparate platforms. The new service, called the Verizon Health Information Exchange, consolidates clinical patient data from various providers and translates it into a standardized format that can then be accessed via a secure Web portal" (Mearian, 7/14).

According to US Department of Health and Human Services, compared with urban Americans, rural residents have higher poverty rates, have fewer doctors, hospitals, and other health resources, and face more difficulty getting to health services. Beginning 2014, when health care reform becomes effective, an estimated 2.4 million Californians will be newly-eligible for Medi-Cal.

CompuMed secures extended contracts with Oklahoma and Arizona's departments of corrections

CompuMed, Inc., a medical informatics and telemedicine services company, has secured extended contracts to provide its signature CardioGram™ electrocardiogram (ECG) remote interpretation systems and over-read services for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (OKDOC) and Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC) at selected facilities throughout both states. The OKDOC rents 21 CardioGram systems, and the ADC owns 45 CardioGram systems.

One of Minnesota's largest providers of supportive housing for seniors will begin testing telemedicine and sensor technology to help frail seniors stay healthier and delay institutional care under an $8 million grant announced Wednesday. It will be the largest project of its kind in the nation, involving about 1,600 clients in 40 rural cities.
