Cyclacel reports positive interim data from sapacitabine Phase 2 study for myelodysplastic syndromes

Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today interim response data from a Phase 2 randomized trial of oral sapacitabine capsules, a novel nucleoside analogue, in older patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) that have failed hypomethylating agents. The data were presented at an oral poster discussion session at the 2010 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

G8 final communique draft shows agreement on maternal, child health initiative, funding amounts not yet set

A final communique draft completed last month for the upcoming G8 summit states that leaders will agree on a maternal health initiative that focuses on improving access to sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning, in the developing world, the Globe and Mail reports. The draft leaves "G8 countries free to decide whether their programs on reproductive health will fund abortions" (Clark, 6/4).

FDA accepts Depomed's DM-1796 NDA for pain after shingles

Depomed, Inc. today announced that the New Drug Application (NDA) for DM-1796 was accepted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the management of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), or pain after shingles. DM-1796 is an investigational, extended release, once-daily tablet formulation of gabapentin designed to reduce dosing frequency and have a low incidence of side effects.

HIV & Hepatitis scare after endoscopy at a Warrawong Clinic

The South-Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health Service claims that the risk of contracting blood borne serious viral infections like HIV and Hepatitis are low among patients who had an endoscopy done at a private Warrawong clinic. This clinic came under into the spotlight after investigations started to detect the cause of illness in nine persons who underwent endoscopy. The facility is at Cowper Street, Warrawong run by Dr Zakaria Lakhany and is presently closed.

30 percent of Aussie mums think it’s OK to drink alcohol while pregnant

A new Australian study has revealed an alarming trend showing one in three pregnant or breastfeeding woman are still drinking alcohol. The Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AERF) feel that in spite of warnings to pregnant women to cut out alcohol completely from their diets, many women are ignoring such warnings.

Lawsuit to be launched over breast cancer gene patent

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are two genes that have been identified to hold a key to women’s susceptibility to get breast or ovarian cancer. Changes also known as mutations in these genes are significant in women who go on to develop breast or ovarian cancer. Melbourne-based company Genetic Technologies Limited (GTL) has the exclusive license from American biotechnology company Myriad Genetics to carry out testing for the genes in Australia. Myriad holds a patent for these genes.

Hana Biosciences signs Investment Agreement with Warburg Pincus and Deerfield Management

Hana Biosciences Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on strengthening the foundation of cancer care, today announced that it has entered into an Investment Agreement with Warburg Pincus and Deerfield Management for the sale of up to $100 million in preferred stock. Targeted therapy that benefits patients with metastatic colon cancer fails to help patients with stage III cancer

To the surprise of researchers at Mayo Clinic who led a national clinical trial, a targeted therapy that provides benefit to patients with metastatic colon cancer has failed to help patients with less advanced, stage III cancer. In fact, patients who used the agent, cetuximab, with chemotherapy had outcomes slightly inferior to patients treated with chemotherapy alone.
