ANCC redesignates Sinai Hospital of Baltimore as Magnet-recognized hospital

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has redesignated Sinai Hospital of Baltimore as a Magnet®-recognized hospital, a distinction that honors nursing excellence in patient care, leadership and growth opportunities for nurses within a health care organization. US News & World Report uses the Magnet designation as a factor when ranking the best medical centers in 16 specialties.

Hospitals that achieve Magnet status go through a rigorous review process. Sinai's application was approximately 1,500 pages and included 795 attachments and 167 graphs. The in-depth report focused on the ways that Sinai's structures and processes met 60 standards in five areas: transformational leadership; structural empowerment; exemplary professional practice; new knowledge, innovations and improvement; and empirical outcomes. The selection process also involved Magnet appraisers coming to Sinai to interview 600 bedside nurses.

"A Magnet designation is the ultimate embodiment of nursing excellence. It demonstrates our continuous commitment to improved outcomes, patient satisfaction and staff satisfaction and is well aligned with our strategic focus on operational excellence and value enhancement," explained Diane Johnson, vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer for Sinai Hospital. "I am very proud of our staff and leaders who made this redesignation possible. This is a thrilling accomplishment!"

Sinai was initially designated as a Magnet Hospital in 2008, the first time the hospital applied; a designation is four years long. At that time, it was the first and only community teaching hospital in Maryland to achieve this distinction. Today only six Maryland hospitals have earned the honor, and fewer than 500 hospitals across the country are recognized as Magnet hospitals.

"Our nursing staff embodies the exemplary care that is the Sinai standard," says Amy Perry, president of Sinai Hospital and executive vice president of LifeBridge Health. "The dedication and compassion of our nurses and our entire Sinai team continue to distinguish Sinai from other hospitals in the region, and beyond."
