Quintiles today announced the availability of anatomic pathology services through its central laboratory in Beijing, China, to help biopharmaceutical companies develop more effective cancer treatments. These services complement assay development, digital pathology and core lab offerings available through the facility to help customers comply with China’s restrictions on tissue import/export.

Combination of daclizumab and interferon beta significantly reduces MS lesion formation

Biogen Idec and Facet Biotech Corporation today announced the publication of Phase 2 data showing that the addition of daclizumab to interferon beta (IFNβ) led to a significant reduction in the number of new or enlarged multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions when compared to IFNβ alone in patients with active relapsing forms of MS.

Amgen and Centocor Ortho Biotech Products: FDA approves REMS for Aranesp, EPOGEN and PROCRIT ESAs

Amgen Inc. and Centocor Ortho Biotech Products, L.P., today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) for erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), which include Aranesp® (darbepoetin alfa), EPOGEN® (Epoetin alfa) and PROCRIT® (Epoetin alfa).

TopoTarget pays Celldex Therapeutics $3M sublicense income over Belinostat co-development agreement

Celldex Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it has received a sublicense income payment of $3 million from TopoTarget A/S as a result of the recent co-development and commercialization agreement between TopoTarget and Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for Belinostat, a novel histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor for the treatment of cancer.

Tobacco users with HPV-positive head and neck cancers at increased risk of recurrence

Patients with head and neck cancer linked to high risk human papillomavirus, or HPV, have worse outcomes if they are current or former tobacco users, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Histone modifications associated with pancreatic cancer development and progression

Specific chemical modifications to proteins called histones, which are found in the nucleus of cells and act as spools around which DNA is wound, can be used to predict prognosis and response to treatment in subsets patients with pancreatic cancer, a study by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has found.

Study shows benefits of stent grafts over balloon angioplasty for patients who undergo dialysis

A randomized multicenter study of 190 patients at 13 medical centers shows-- for the first time-- the "superior" benefit of stent grafts over balloon angioplasty for maintaining function of dialysis access grafts in kidney failure patients who undergo dialysis. Until now, no other therapy has proven more effective than angioplasty.

Third party reexamination of Phase III study of Ereska meets primary endpoint

Javelin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that a reexamination conducted by a third party of pain score measurements from its Phase III study of Ereska™ (intranasal ketamine) showed that top line results for its primary endpoint were statistically significant. Previously, Javelin had reported that the top line results for its primary endpoint were not statistically significant.
