Obama skipping AIDS conference; Black community still bearing high burden of the disease

For all the dignitaries on the schedule at the International AIDS Conference this week in Washington, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates and former President Bill Clinton, it's the absence of one that has activists talking. With the conference being held in the U.S. for the first time in 22 years, President Barack Obama is out of town campaigning and raising money for his re-election. His only presence is a 50-second cameo in a three-minute video welcoming delegates.

Vienna Declaration launches ad campaign calling on U.S. presidential candidates to end 'war on drugs'

As delegates gathered for the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) this week in Washington, D.C., "supporters of the 2010 Vienna Declaration, which urges governments to write evidence-based drug policies," launched an ad campaign calling on U.S. President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney "to stop the spread of AIDS by ending the so-called 'war on drugs,'" the Globe and Mail reports.

AIDS activists march in Washington, India to protest marginalization of sex workers, drug users

"AIDS activists gathering in Washington, D.C., and Kolkata, India, this week have denounced conditions attached to U.S. global AIDS funding, which they say have damaged the response to the epidemic by further marginalizing sex workers -- among those hardest hit" by the epidemic, the Guardian reports.

NIDA announces 2012 recipient of Avant-Garde Award for Medications Development

Dr. Gary R. Matyas has been selected the 2012 recipient of the NIDA Avant-Garde Award for Medications Development. Matyas proposes to develop an effective, safe and easily manufactured combination anti-heroin/HIV vaccine that could treat heroin addiction while at the same time prevent HIV infection in those receiving the vaccine.

Louisiana lawmakers bristled Monday about getting few details and no ability to decide the $523 million in budget cuts Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration has made to health care programs, largely to LSU's safety net health care facilities. Several complained the governor's top leaders weren't explaining the gravity of the slashing and the implications on the LSU network of public hospitals and clinics that care for the poor and uninsured in a state where one in five residents don't have health insurance.

Recent release: Congressional briefing looks to maximize resources for HIV/AIDS response

A UNAIDS press release describes a Congressional bipartisan briefing that took place on Tuesday with the theme, "Together we will end AIDS." Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) hosted the briefing, which aimed to "find ways of maximizing new opportunities to respond to HIV," according to the press release.

The U.S. Census Bureau on Monday launched an interactive global resource on the prevalence of HIV infection and AIDS cases and deaths, which contains 149,000 statistics, making it the "most complete of its kind in the world," according to a Census Bureau press release.

Recent release: More effort needed to reach universal access to ART by 2015, MSF/UNAIDS report says

"Much still needs to be done to get treatment to those who need it and to meet the UNAIDS-endorsed goal to achieve universal access by 2015, according to a new survey examining 25 HIV indicators assessing strategies, tools and policies to get the best HIV treatment to more people, sooner," the Center for Global Health Policy's "Science Speaks" blog reports.

Miriam researchers encourage physicians to inquire about ED symptoms in young, middle-aged men

Although erectile dysfunction (ED) has been shown to be an early warning sign for heart disease, some physicians - and patients - still think of it as just as a natural part of "old age." But now an international team of researchers, led by physicians at The Miriam Hospital, say it's time to expand ED symptom screening to include younger and middle-aged men.

Survey offers solutions to meet the needs of young people with HIV

Very few children are born with HIV in Thailand today. During the 1990s, the Thai government implemented a vast prevention programme in order to control the epidemic that was rife in the North of the country. The reduction of mother-to-child transmission was one of the major successes resulting from these measures. However, before this programme was established, numerous infants were born with the infection.

Community health campaigns reduce incidence of HIV virus levels in rural Uganda

Population-wide levels of HIV virus dropped substantially between 2011 and May 2012 in a rural part of southwestern Uganda, the site of two community health campaigns led by doctors at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (SFGH) and Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.

Human defensins, aptly named antimicrobial peptides, are made in immune system cells and epithelial cells (such as skin cells and cells that line the gut). New NIAID grant to support development of topical microbicide gel for HIV and HSV-2 infections

A new grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) will support the development of a topical microbicide gel for drug delivery. The innovative gel formulation will be a combination therapy against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infections in women.
