Bariatric surgery can reduce pregnancy complications in obese women

Obese women who have bariatric surgery before getting pregnant are at significantly lower risk for developing dangerous hypertensive disorders during pregnancy than those who don't, according to a study of medical insurance records by Johns Hopkins experts.

Hybridyne Imaging Technologies' ProxiScan gamma camera receives FDA clearance for endocavity imaging

Hybridyne Imaging Technologies, Inc., a developer of compact, high-resolution gamma cameras for the detection of cancer and other abnormalities in the body, announces FDA clearance of ProxiScan. The system can be used in imaging the distribution of radionuclides in the human body using planar imaging techniques. ProxiScan may also be used intra-operatively, on pathological specimens and for endocavity applications if a protective sheath is used.

Americans associate good health with lifestyle behaviors, but overlook key Vital Health measures

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today released results from the inaugural Vital Health Report, which demonstrate that Americans associate good health with lifestyle behaviors and habits, but overlook their key Vital Health measures (e.g. cholesterol, body mass index, blood pressure, disease screenings), some of the true indicators of overall health. The report further reveals that Americans believe they know more about their Vital Health than they actually do.

Jury ill and further adjournment in Dr Patel manslaughter trial

There has been yet another jury issue that will delay the manslaughter case trial against surgeon Dr. Jayant Patel. Dr. Patel had pleaded not guilty in case of manslaughter against three patients Mervyn John Morris, James Edward Phillips and Gerry Kemps.

Medical schools scramble to address doctor shortage

The Wall Street Journal: "Proponents of the new health-care law say it does attempt to address the physician shortage. The law offers sweeteners to encourage more people to enter medical professions, and a 10% Medicare pay boost for primary-care doctors. … Meanwhile, a number of new medical schools have opened around the country recently."

Hospital acquired infections on the increase

Despite being reported over a decade ago, little has been done in America to reduce hospital born infections as per a Health and Human Services department quality report for 2009 to Congress. Hospital acquired infections seem to be on the increase according to the report when compared with statistics available for 2007. The situation is being seen as critical by many health care experts.

Noncompetitive ''win-win'' relationship between gynecologist and radiologist benefits patients

Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology (JMIG) has published a study in its March/April issue which concluded that establishing a referral relationship with an interventional radiologist for comprehensive uterine myoma (fibroid) treatment supports a trusting, collaborative, long-term, noncompetitive ''win-win'' relationship between the gynecologist and radiologist.

Delcath's Phase III PHP-mel trial data accepted for presentation at ASCO's 2010 Annual Meeting

Delcath Systems, Inc., a medical technology company testing its proprietary treatment system for primary and metastatic cancers to the liver, announced today that the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has accepted an abstract for oral presentation of Delcath's Phase III Trial Data comparing percutaneous hepatic perfusion with melphalan (PHP-mel) to the best alternative care for patients with hepatic metastases from ocular or cutaneous melanoma for ASCO's 2010 Annual Meeting, to be held June 4-8, 2010 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Dalhousie University interdisciplinary cooperation leads to innovation of Femoral Fracture Reduction device

It's late at night when most of the city is sleeping and the hospital is eerily quiet. But in the operating room, a tired but undeterred surgeon is struggling through a femoral fracture reduction on a young patient. The surgery, which is usually a meticulous and straightforward procedure, is not going smoothly. After wrestling with the fracture, he has no choice but to take a more invasive approach. He cuts open the femur and reduces the fracture—if not, displaced fat and marrow could cause a fat embolism in the lungs.

'Forgotten' cells in brain cancer

Glioblastoma is a guileful enemy. While most of the brain tumor can often be removed surgically, in virtually every case the tumor reappears. One reason for this is that sporadic, infiltrative tumor cells will remain in the brain even after most careful surgery. Researchers at the University of Bonn have now subjected these 'forgotten' cells to closer scrutiny for the first time.

New article focuses on the role of registered dietitians in patient management

More than one third of Americans are considered obese and approximately 15 million (5%) Americans now have a body mass index greater than 40. The April issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association focuses on the ever-increasing use of bariatric surgery to control the excess morbidity and mortality associated with extreme obesity and the important role that registered dietitians play in the management of patients who have undergone the procedure.
