Uganda MP calls for increased antiretroviral access at rural health clinics

Uganda's Ministry of Health and other stakeholders should provide rural health clinics with antiretroviral drugs to prevent HIV-positive people from having to travel long distances to obtain the treatment, Member of Parliament Betty Aol Ocan said recently, the New Vision/AllAfrica.com reports

A school-based HIV/AIDS education program in Bali, Indonesia, is being hampered by low participation from schools on the island, Oka Negara, an organizer for the program, said Monday, the Jakarta Post reports. "Most schools are hampered by financial problems," Negara said, adding, "They can't finance the program."

The Indian government plans to establish "link centers," or small antiretroviral clinics, in rural areas to address the challenges associated with accessing the drugs in isolated areas, Reuters reports. According to Reuters, long distances between clinics are hindering the country's efforts to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, particularly in rural areas.

Speakers at second HIV/AIDS implementers' meeting in Uganda call for increased HIV prevention efforts

Conference delegates on Tuesday at the opening of the 2008 HIV/AIDS Implementers' Meeting in Kampala, Uganda, called on countries to increase HIV prevention methods in order to fight complacency about the disease, Xinhuanet reports. Some HIV/AIDS experts speaking at the conference said that although countries have started recording lower HIV/AIDS rates, most responses do not pay enough attention to prevention.

Walgreens to pay $35 million to settle Medicaid prescription drug fraud allegations

Walgreen Co. of Deerfield, Ill., has agreed to pay $35 million to settle claims that from 2001 to 2005, it improperly switched patients to different versions of the prescriptions drugs Ranitidine, Fluoxetine and Eldepryl in order to increase its reimbursement from Medicaid, the Justice Department announced today.
