Dysplasia is a term used in pathology to refer to an abnormality in maturation of cells within a tissue. This generally consists of an expansion of immature cells, with a corresponding decrease in the number and location of mature cells.

SAGES issues new practice guideline for surgical treatment of GERD

BARRX Medical Inc., a leader in the development of minimally invasive medical devices designed to remove precancerous tissue from within the gastrointestinal tract, reported today that the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons has issued a new practice guideline for the surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Left untreated, reflux of stomach contents such as acid and bile into the esophagus in GERD patients often leads to injury and chronic inflammation of the lining of the esophagus.

Discovery Laboratories, Inc., announces the publication of results from its previously-conducted Phase 2a feasibility study of Aerosurf, the Company's aerosolized KL4 surfactant, for the prevention of respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants, in the May 2010 issue of the Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery in the study titled "An Open Label, Pilot Study of Aerosurf Combined with nCPAP to Prevent RDS in Preterm Neonates".

Study confirms long-term durability of endoscopic RFA using HALO system for eradicating Barrett's esophagus

Results from two major multi-center clinical trials presented at the Digestive Disease Week in New Orleans independently confirmed that the effects of endoscopic radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for eradicating a pre-cancerous condition of the esophagus called Barrett's esophagus are durable in the long-term. In a plenary scientific presentation titled "Endoscopic Radiofrequency Ablation for Barrett's Esophagus: Five-year Durability Outcomes from a Prospective Multi-Center Trial," patients with Barrett's esophagus were treated with endoscopic RFA using the HALO system.

Colorectal pre-cancer can be detected through stool DNA testing: Mayo Clinic study

Research teams led by Mayo Clinic have demonstrated for the first time that two types of colorectal pre-cancers can be detected through noninvasive stool DNA testing. The two studies being presented demonstrate that stool DNA testing may be useful for detection of premalignant dysplasia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and of an important type of colorectal pre-cancer called serrated polyps.

Children born very early have abnormal lung function: U.K. researchers

More than half of children who were born very early—at 25 weeks or less (normal gestation is around 40 weeks)— have abnormal lung function and are twice as likely as their full-term peers to have a diagnosis of asthma, according to U.K. researchers, who followed a national cohort of extremely preterm infants to age 11.

Phase III data reveals potential of Merck’s GARDASIL in preventing HPV and HPV-related cancers

Merck & Co., Inc. announced today that in new Phase III data, GARDASIL® [Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent (Types 6, 11, 16 and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant] was 77.5 percent (95 percent CI: 39.6, 93.3) efficacious against anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16 and 18 in 16-to-26 year-old men who have sex with men. The data were presented at the European Research Organization on Genital Infection and Neoplasia (EUROGIN) conference in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Certain patients with IBD at increased risk of developing colorectal cancer: AGA's new guidelines

Certain patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease of the colon, have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer compared to individuals without IBD. A number of factors contribute to the increase in risk, which necessitates an individualized and sensible approach to surveillance in patients, according to a new medical position statement and technical review published by the American Gastroenterological Association in its official journal, Gastroenterology.
