PharMerica acquires Lone Star Pharmacy

PharMerica Corporation, a national provider of institutional pharmacy and hospital pharmacy management services, announced today that it has acquired substantially all the assets of Lone Star Pharmacy based in Garland, Texas. Lone Star Pharmacy is a full service pharmacy to long-term care and assisted living facilities primarily in Dallas and Houston.

UMMC improves delivery turnaround time, enhances nurse satisfaction with MedEx system

Using MedEx, Aethon's comprehensive medication tracking system, the University of Maryland Medical Center has improved delivery turnaround time, reduced personnel costs and enhanced nurse satisfaction. This was the overriding theme of a presentation by UMMC at the American Society of Health System Pharmacists midyear conference in Anaheim.

NIH Clinical Center opens doors to Damon Runyon Clinical Investigators

A new pilot partnership between the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, the National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Research, and the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation will offer some of the capabilities and expertise of America's research hospital to an external group of clinical investigators in cancer research. The special talent and resources of the NIH will allow Damon Runyon-funded investigators to undertake studies and collaborations that will advance understanding of the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.

Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information and business intelligence for professionals, students and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health and pharmacy, today announced it has completed the acquisition of Pharmacy OneSource, a leading Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider in the hospital pharmacy market. The agreement to acquire Pharmacy OneSource was announced on November 29, 2010.

PwC: Top Health Industry Issues of 2011

Health organizations will undergo a strategy makeover in 2011 as they react to new rules and payment models, continuing cost pressures and new customer demands, according to the Top Health Industry Issues of 2011, published today by PwC's Health Research Institute. But in a recent nationwide survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, PwC found that consumers don't fully understand or buy-in to all the changes.

Novartis' Gilenya uptake to increase

A study published this week by ITG revealed that Novartis recently approved drug, Gilenya, has already taken share from market leaders in the multiple sclerosis (MS) market, and uptake is expected to increase significantly over the next year. Gilenya came onto the market in late September as the first FDA-approved oral disease-modifying MS drug, and Novartis initially faced safety concerns and monitoring requirements that deterred some physicians from adopting the new drug.

Marketers must pay $2.1M to refund purchasers of Disney- and Marvel heroes-licensed vitamins

As part of its ongoing efforts to stop bogus health claims, the Federal Trade Commission has reached a settlement requiring major marketers of children's vitamins to stop making false and unproven claims that their supplements promote healthy brain and eye development in children. The companies have agreed to pay $2.1 million to provide refunds to consumers who purchased certain multivitamins in their Disney and Marvel Heroes line.
