DOJ investigates alleged fraud by drugmakers; sanctions on wellcare lifted

"A $112 million settlement involving alleged drug kickbacks that the Justice Dept. announced with the nation's largest nursing home pharmacy and a generic drug manufacturer on Nov. 3 is part of a wide-ranging investigation of suspected Medicaid fraud by the pharmaceutical industry," Business Week reports. "Critics say the continuing probe, which involves Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and other major drugmakers, highlights what they describe as an industry practice of paying money to outfits that provide drugs to consumers, in return for preferential treatment."

CIGNA reports consolidated revenues of $4.5 billion for the third quarter of 2009

CIGNA Corporation today reported shareholders’ net income of $329 million, or $1.19 per share, for the third quarter of 2009 compared with shareholders’ net income of $171 million, or $0.62 per share, for the same period last year. Shareholders’ net income for the third quarter 2009 included income related to the variable annuity products within our Run-off Reinsurance segment of $16 million after-tax, or $0.06 per share, primarily related to favorable performance in the equity markets.

A study at Johns Hopkins Children's Center found that girls diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) who watched a short educational video were three times more likely to discuss their condition with their partners and to ensure partner treatment than girls diagnosed and treated without seeing the film.

Humana reports higher consolidated revenues for third quarter at $7.72 billion

Humana Inc. today reported diluted earnings per common share (EPS) for the quarter ended September 30, 2009 (3Q09) of $1.78, consistent with management’s guidance of $1.75 to $1.80. The company earned $1.09 per share for the quarter ended September 30, 2008 (3Q08) which reflected $0.40 per share in realized losses primarily associated with other-than-temporary impairments in investments and sales of distressed financial institution securities.
