Study shows schizophrenia, bipolar disorder share the most common genetic variation

The largest genome-wide study of its kind has determined how much five major mental illnesses are traceable to the same common inherited genetic variations. Researchers funded in part by the National Institutes of Health found that the overlap was highest between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; moderate for bipolar disorder and depression and for ADHD and depression; and low between schizophrenia and autism.

GE, UW scientists to develop new medical device for detecting infectious disease

You've heard of on-demand TV, now imagine on-demand medical diagnosis - anytime, anywhere in the world. Scientists at GE Global Research, the technology development arm of the General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE), are working with a team based at the University of Washington to develop a new medical device, the size of a pack of playing cards, that can detect infectious disease by way of a simple nasal swab, in less than an hour.

FitBionic completes $2.2M funding round with KMG Capital Partners, CID4 and High Country Venture

FitBionic has completed a $2.2 million funding round with a team led by KMG Capital Partners, with High Country Venture and the Colorado Institute for Drug, Device and Diagnostic Development. The investment was developed in support of the global launch of FitBionic's currently available first product, the FitBionic Foot, and as a bridge to the company's Series A financing, which is expected in 2014.

The invasion of brain-tumor cells into surrounding tissue requires the same protein molecule that neurons need to migrate into position as they differentiate and mature, according to new research from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine and published August 7 in the online journal PLOS ONE.

Study could boost development of personalised medicine in cancer care and therapy

A team of scientists led by Associate Professor Zeng Qi from A*STAR's Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology have discovered a new biomarker which will help physicians predict how well cancer patients respond to cancer drugs. Having the means to identify patients who are most likely to benefit from currently available cancer drugs not only reduces substantially the healthcare cost for the patient, it could mean saving precious lives by getting the right drugs to the right patient at the onset of the treatment.

GSTS Pathology celebrate success of Innovation Academy event

GSTS Pathology recently hosted their first Innovation Academy event in London (28 June 2013). This inaugural scientific symposium welcomed over 100 attendees, offering participants great networking opportunities and the chance to hear presentations from a group of GSTS experts. Discussions were focused into four tracks: Child Health, Keeping People Healthy, Infectious Diseases, and Next Generation Diagnostics. On show was the innovative approach to laboratory medicine that can be found throughout the GSTS Pathology organisation.
