JumpStart Ventures, the non-profit that invests in and partners with innovative, early-stage companies in Northeast Ohio, and Cleveland Clinic, announced a combined investment commitment of $500,000 in SironRX Therapeutics, Inc. The Cleveland-based company is developing a topical therapy to enhance healing of and decrease scar formation in wounds.

Patients with kidney tumours can benefit from nephron-sparing surgery

Patients with kidney tumours larger than four centimetres are much more likely to enjoy good long-term renal function if they undergo nephron-sparing surgery rather than radical nephrectomy, according to a study in the February issue of the urology journal BJUI.

Merck reports GAAP net income of $861 million for 2010

Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, today announced financial results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2010. The company reported non-GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) earnings per share (EPS) for the fourth quarter of $0.88, which excludes purchase accounting adjustments, restructuring costs and merger-related expenses.

Rare new disease identified – calcium accumulates in blood vessels

A new rare disease has been identified. Louise Benge’s started having difficulty in walking when she was 25. She developed hardening and pain over her calves and hands. She worsened over the next 20 years. Her family physician in Mount Vernon, Ky., was at a loss, as were a vascular specialist, a hand specialist and a kidney specialist. Her two sisters and two brothers had the problem too, but no doctor could understand why.

Losartan improves effectiveness of nanotherapeutics against cancer

Low doses of an inexpensive, FDA-approved hypertension medication may improve the results of nanotherapeutic approaches to cancer treatment. In a report in the early edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) investigators describe experiments showing that the generic drug losartan, by modifying the network of collagen fibers that characterizes most solid tumors, improved the effectiveness of two nanotherapeutics against several types of cancer.

Isotechnika closes licensing deal with ILJIN Life Science to advance development of voclosporin

Isotechnika Pharma Inc. is pleased to announce that it has finalized the Development, Distribution and License Agreement with ILJIN Life Science Co., Ltd., previously announced on November 16, 2010. Isotechnika will now receive the license fee of US$4.5 million plus proceeds of US$2.375 million from ILJIN's purchase of its first tranche of Common Shares from treasury.

Zebrafish research findings may provide potential to improve kidney function in humans

It is estimated that up to 10 percent of the U.S. population may have some form of renal disease, with 450,000 patients with end stage renal disease requiring hemodialysis. Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh have identified a cell in zebrafish that can be transplanted from one fish to another to regenerate nephrons, providing the potential to improve kidney function.

American Cancer Society reports racial disparity continues to increase death rate for some cancers

While the overall death rate for cancer continues to drop among African Americans, the group continues to have higher death rates and shorter survival of any racial and ethnic group in the U.S. for most cancers. The findings come from Cancer Facts & Figures for African Americans 2011-2012, the latest edition of a report produced every two years by the American Cancer Society.

French guy says Parkinson’s drug induced gambling and gay sex addiction, tries to sue GSK for $610,000

GlaxoSmithKline is being sued this week by a French father-of-two, alleging the British pharmaceutical firm’s drug – Reqip (Ropirnirole) to treat Parkinson’s disease turned him into a gay sex and gambling addict. Parkinson’s disease is a seriously and progressively debilitating disease that leads to tremors, slowing of movements and ultimately total immobility.
