Three-year efficacy data on STELARA for psoriasis presented at American Academy of Dermatology meeting

New study findings showed that a majority of patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who had a previous response to STELARA® (ustekinumab) sustained a clinical response for up to three years with continued treatment regardless of their body weight. Investigators also presented findings from an integrated safety analysis that included data from one Phase 2 and three Phase 3 trials in which treatment with STELARA demonstrated a favorable benefit-risk profile for up to three years of treatment, consistent with previous analyses.

CGI receive contract for chronic disease management system

eHealth Ontario and Infrastructure Ontario announced today that with the awarding of a contract to CGI Information Systems and Management Consultants Inc., a subsidiary of CGI Group Inc., work can begin on a chronic disease management system (CDMS) that will be used initially as a Diabetes Registry to manage diabetes care.

UT Southwestern enters partnership with Sun Yat-sen University to promote scientific research

UT Southwestern Medical Center has entered into an academic and scientific partnership with Sun Yat-sen University and its First Affiliated Hospital in Guangzhou, China. The first international institutional affiliation for UT Southwestern and a first step in implementing the global health initiative that is one of the medical center's current strategic priorities, the partnership was developed to promote joint scientific research, educational, and training activities.

Hemodialysis with AVF depends on patient’s health insurance: Study

Kidney disease patients insured by some federally sponsored national health care organizations are more likely to undergo an important predialysis procedure than patients with other types of insurance, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN). The results may provide insights into ways to improve kidney-related care for patients before they go on dialysis.

Pay-for-performance makes its way into dialysis clinics

Chattanooga (Tenn.) Times Free Press: A new Medicare rule may ding dialysis centers by up to two percent of their reimbursement in 2012 if they don't meet quality standards the agency sets. The program "is the agency's first pay-per-performance system, and it won't be the last." The agency has, however, run various experiments that pay providers for better performance.

Multiple tattoos increase risk of contracting hepatitis C: Study

Youth, prison inmates and individuals with multiple tattoos that cover large parts of their bodies are at higher risk of contracting hepatitis C and other blood-borne diseases, according to a University of British Columbia study.The researchers reviewed and analysed 124 studies from 30 countries, including Canada, Iran, Italy, Brazil and the United States, and found the incidence of hepatitis C after tattooing is directly linked with the number of tattoos an individual receives. The findings are published in the current issue of the International Journal of Infectious Diseases.

The results suggest that medical professionals need to improve care for patients who have not yet started dialysis.

Endo Pharmaceuticals today reported financial results for the second quarter 2010. Total revenues during the second quarter of 2010 increased 6 percent to $396.5 million, compared with $373.1 million in the same quarter of 2009. Net income for the three months ended June 30, 2010 was $51.5 million, compared with $30.0 million in the comparable 2009 period.
