Family planning summit offers opportunity to integrate reproductive services with HIV, other health initiatives

Noting that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the U.K. government will co-host an international family planning summit in London in July, Gavin Yamey of the Global Health Group at the University of California, San Francisco; Craig Cohen, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive services at the University of California; and Elizabeth Bukusi, chief research officer and deputy director of research and training at the Kenya Medical Research Institute, write in a BMJ commentary, "More than 120 million women worldwide aged 15-49 years have an unmet need for family planning, which is due a renaissance after years of neglect."

Sun exposure, vitamin D and pancreatic cancer risk

High levels of ultraviolet radiation at an individual's birth location, sun-sensitive skin type and a history of skin cancer each decreased risk for pancreatic cancer, according to study results presented at the American Association for Cancer Research's Pancreatic Cancer: Progress and Challenges conference, held here June 18-21.

Study finds no evidence to support an effect of THC on MS progression

The first large non-commercial study to investigate whether the main active constituent of cannabis (tetrahydrocannabinol or THC) is effective in slowing the course of progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) shows that there is no evidence to suggest this; although benefits were noted for those at the lower end of the disability scale.

MSF report examines past, present, future management of neglected tropical diseases

"In order to break the vicious cycle that leaves tropical diseases neglected, existing programs that diagnose and treat patients need to be expanded and medical research to develop simpler, more effective tools needs to be supported, according to a new report, Fighting Neglect, released Monday by Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders (MSF)," the organization reports on its webpage.

BioMed Realty enters definitive agreement to acquire Granta Park

BioMed Realty Trust, Inc. today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Granta Park, comprising eleven laboratory and office buildings and a total of approximately 472,200 square feet of space, as well as approximately 138,400 square feet of development and expansion rights, in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The purchase price for the property is 126.8 million pounds, or approximately $196.0 million, excluding transaction costs.
