A flash fire on a patient during surgery is a very real tragedy, often leading to disfigurement, disability or even death. Though surgical fires are uncommon--about 550 to 650 occur in the United States each year--their consequences are grave enough to warrant ongoing prevention education by healthcare providers.

H.R. 3790 wins praises in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Association of Medical Suppliers and the American Association for Homecare praised a bipartisan bill in Congress, H.R. 3790, to eliminate the misguided and deeply flawed "competitive" bidding program for durable medical equipment and services in Medicare. The bidding process in this controversial program began on October 21 in the Pittsburgh metropolitan statistical areas and seven other MSAs across the U.S.

Researchers develop a new test process for cancer drugs

It is very difficult to predict whether a cancer drug will help an individual patient: only around one third of drugs will work directly in a given patient. Researchers at the Heinz Nixdorf Chair for Medical Electronics at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) have developed a new test process for cancer drugs.

OrSense presents data on its NBM-200MP system for hemoglobin and blood oximetry measurements

OrSense Ltd., developer of monitors for non-invasive measurements of various blood parameters, presented today at the American Association of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual meeting, in New Orleans. The results from a multi-center study indicate that NBM-200MP, a continuous, non-invasive monitoring system, measures levels of oxygen saturation and hemoglobin accurately and reliably in comparison to accepted methods.

Somanetics Corporation today announced that it has signed an Exclusive Sublicense Agreement with Raba Equity Partners II, LLC ("Raba coreFoundry"). Under terms of the agreement, Somanetics has obtained exclusive rights, subject to specified rights of the U.S. Government and rights retained by The Johns Hopkins University, to new cerebral autoregulation technology developed at The Johns Hopkins University.

NASA has signed a patent license agreement with a California company to improve the medical community's access to hyperbaric chambers used to treat many medical conditions and emergencies. OxyHeal Medical Systems Inc. of National City, Calif., will develop new products based on technologies NASA originally developed for space.

H1N1 patients with ARDS survive illness when treated with ECMO

Despite the severity of disease and the intensity of treatment, most patients in Australia and New Zealand who experienced respiratory failure as a result of 2009 influenza A(H1N1) and were treated with a system that adds oxygen to the patient's blood survived the disease, according to a study to appear in the November 4 issue of JAMA.

He will begin in New York City’s Times Square on October 15, 2009, and complete the trek in Charleston, South Carolina, on November 2, 2009.
