Concert and WRAIR enter CRADA to evaluate novel compound for seizure protection associated with TBI

Concert Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The CRADA will allow the WRAIR to conduct preclinical testing on a novel compound derived from Concert's DCE Platform™ (deuterated chemical entity platform) for seizure protection associated with traumatic brain injury, a major public health concern.

Researchers to develop new diagnostics platform for early detection of lung cancer

The earlier cancers can be detected, the better the chances of a cure. Researchers are now working to develop a new diagnostics platform with which the illness can be diagnosed in its early stages, even during a visit to the general practitioner: protein biomarkers in exhaled air divulge the presence of pathological cells in the lung.

Four-gene/protein signature more accurately predicts metastatic prostate cancer

Prostate tumors that carry a "signature" of four molecular markers have the potential to become dangerously metastatic if not treated aggressively, researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute report in a study published online today by the journal Nature. The discovery lays the groundwork for the first gene-based test for determining whether a man's prostate cancer is likely to remain dormant within the prostate gland, or spread lethally to other parts of the body.

Silicon dioxide coated rust nanoparticles to fight cervical cancer

The next big thing in medical diagnostics could be minutes particles of rust, iron oxide, coated with the material from which sand is formed, silicon dioxide. These magnetic nanoparticles, a mere 29 to 230 nanometers across, can be used to trap antibodies to the virus that causes cervical cancer and to the bacteria that causes potentially lethal diarrhea.

Abbott receives US regulatory clearance and Japanese approval for TREK Coronary Dilatation Catheters

Abbott today announced it has received regulatory clearance in the United States and approval in Japan for its TREK and MINI-TREK Coronary Dilatation Catheters for the treatment of coronary artery disease. The TREK system is used in angioplasty procedures and is designed to enable interventional cardiologists to open patients' narrowed coronary arteries. The TREK system received CE Mark and was launched in Europe in May 2010.
