New data indicates early association between anti-inflammatory medication and cardiovascular risk

Clinical trial data indicated an association between the anti-inflammatory medication rofecoxib and cardiovascular risk as early as December 2000, before the product was taken off the market in September 2004, according to a report in the November 23 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Proteon Therapeutics commences PRT-201 Phase 1/2 clinical study in hemodialysis patients

Proteon Therapeutics, Inc., has initiated a Phase 1/2 human clinical study of its lead product, PRT-201, in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing surgery for arteriovenous graft (AVG) creation. The AVG study represents Proteon's second human clinical study in hemodialysis patients, previously announcing the initiation of a Phase 1/2 study of PRT-201 in ESRD patients undergoing surgery for arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation earlier this year.

Mutated IDH1 gene has novel enzyme activity consistent with cancer-causing gene: Study

Agios Pharmaceuticals today announced that its scientists have established, for the first time, that the mutated IDH1 gene has a novel enzyme activity consistent with a cancer-causing gene, or oncogene. This breakthrough discovery shows that the mutated form of IDH1 produces a metabolite, 2-hydroxyglutarate (2HG), which may contribute to the formation and malignant progression of gliomas, the most common type of brain cancers.

FDA Warning Letter for Deconsal: Cornerstone Therapeutics preparing a response

Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on acquiring, developing and commercializing significant products primarily for the respiratory and related markets, today reported that it had received a Warning Letter from the Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") alleging that its Deconsal CT chewable tablets (Phenylephrine HCl 10 mg, Pyrilamine Maleate 16 mg) and Deconsal DM chewable tablets (Phenylephrine HCl 10 mg, Pyrilamine Maleate 16 mg, Dextromothorphan HBr 15 mg) are new drugs lacking an approved application and as such should not be introduced into interstate commerce.

U.S. District Court rules in favor of Cell Therapeutics to pursue all of its claims against The Lash Group

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. announced today that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a U.S. District Court order and ruled that CTI should be allowed to pursue all of its claims against The Lash Group, sending the case back to the District Court for trial. CTI filed a complaint against The Lash Group, CTI's former third-party reimbursement consultant for CTI's product TRISENOX, in 2007 seeking $22.8 million in damages for expenses already incurred related to the investigation, defense and a settlement of claims by the U.S. government concerning Medicare reimbursement for TRISENOX and other business losses.
