ICREA researcher has set up spin-off Supragen at IRB Barcelona

Roger Gomis, ICREA researcher at the Institute of Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) has set up the spin-off Supragen. With the support of IRB Barcelona and the Instituci- Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avan-ats (ICREA), this initiative is the second biotech company to emerge from the institute since June and the third since this centre was set up towards the end of 2005.

Weill Cornell receives NIH's T-R01 Award for spina bifida research

"The information gathered by an intelligent t-shirt using e-textile technology is sent, without using wires, to an information management system, which then shows the patient's location and vital signs in real time", explain the UC3M researchers.

Paper criticizes biomedical ontologies based purely on philosophical ideas

Professors and researchers from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid's Facultad de Informática, Víctor Maojo, José Crespo, Miguel García Remesal, David Pérez del Rey and Diana de la Iglesia, and from Rutgers University, Casimir Kulikowski, have published an article in the Methods of Information in Medicine journal. This paper criticizes biomedical ontologies based purely on philosophical ideas and states a host of potential scientific constraints.

New insights into Lafora disease

Short-term energy storage in animal cells is usually achieved through the accumulation of glucose, in the form of long and branched chains, known as glycogen. But when this accumulation happens in neurons it is fatal, causing them to degenerate. This neuronal deterioration and death associated with glycogen accumulation is the hallmark of an extremely rare and progressive type of epilepsy known as Lafora disease (LD).

Springer signs book agreement with the American Physiological Society

Springer has signed a book partnership agreement with the American Physiological Society (APS) to publish titles in three APS book series as well as individual monographs and contributed volumes. The new publications are aimed primarily at researchers and will support Springer’s growing physiology publishing program.

Universal flu vaccine based on “super antibody” coming soon

Researchers have finally found the first antibody which can fight all types of the influenza A virus. The results of the experiments on flu-infected mice, published in Science Express, showed the antibody could be used as an “emergency treatment” for flu as well.
