Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of all cancer deaths in the United States and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in individuals ages 40 to 60. Approximately 37,000 Americans are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year, and, each year, approximately the same number die from it. Often, pancreatic cancer is found too late for surgical intervention, and chemotherapy and radiation treatments have little effect.

FDA grants orphan drug designation to Aduro's CRS-207 for treatment of pancreatic cancer

Aduro BioTech, Inc. announced today that the Office of Orphan Products Development of the Food and Drug Administration has granted orphan drug designation for CRS-207, a novel immunotherapy, for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

Study: Elevated BMI may affect survival in pancreatic cancer patients

New results from a prospective study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology show that patients with a body mass index (BMI) in the obese range live on average two to three months less after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, compared with healthy weight patients, even after adjusting for factors that are known to predict survival for patients with this disease, such as age and disease stage.

NEJM publishes Celgene’s Abraxane phase III study results

Published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, a phase III clinical trial of Abraxane (paclitaxel formulated as albumin-bound nanoparticles) in combination with gemcitabine in treatment-naive patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in overall survival compared to patients receiving gemcitabine alone [(median of 8.5 vs. 6.7 months) (HR 0.72, P=0.000015)].

Gemcitabine drug improves survival rates in patients with pancreatic cancer

Among patients with pancreatic cancer who had surgery for removal of the cancer, treatment with the drug gemcitabine for 6 months resulted in increased overall survival as well as disease-free survival, compared with observation alone, according to a study in the October 9 issue of JAMA.
