A stroke is a medical emergency. Strokes happen when blood flow to your brain stops. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. There are two kinds of stroke. The more common kind, called ischemic stroke, is caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain. The other kind, called hemorrhagic stroke, is caused by a blood vessel that breaks and bleeds into the brain. "Mini-strokes" or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), occur when the blood supply to the brain is briefly interrupted.

Simcere's diosmectite API in generic drug Biqi passes EU-GMP inspection

Simcere Pharmaceutical Group, a leading pharmaceutical company specializing in the development, manufacturing, and marketing of branded generic and proprietary pharmaceuticals in China, today announced that its diosmectite, the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) in Simcere's branded generic drug Biqi, has passed EU-GMP inspection. This enables Simcere to market diosmectite in the European Union countries.

Kaiser Permanente physician to receive ASH Marvin Moser Clinical Hypertension Award

Kaiser Permanente physician Joel Handler, MD, has been selected to receive a national award from the American Society of Hypertension for his "outstanding dedication to the treatment and care of hypertensive patients." The City of Orange resident is a critical care specialist at Kaiser Permanente's Anaheim Medical Center and has served area residents for over 30 years.

Statin use may increase risk of developing benign colorectal tumors: APC trial

Statins did not protect patients against colorectal adenomas, which are benign precursors of colorectal cancer, according to results of a secondary analysis of the Adenoma Prevention with Celecoxib trial. In a population at high-risk for developing these lesions, results of this analysis suggested statin use may increase the risk of developing benign colorectal tumors.

Epix Pharmaceuticals' MRI imaging intellectual properties to be auctioned on May 28, 2010

Joseph F. Finn, Jr., C.P.A., Assignee for the Benefit of Creditors of Epix Pharmaceuticals, Inc., announced today that the MRI imaging intellectual properties will be auctioned on May 28, 2010. The assets of Epix were transferred to him on July 20, 2009 and he is liquidating them for the benefit of Epix creditors. He recently reached an agreement with Bayer Schering Pharma that permits the sale of the MRI imaging programs.

Intensive rehabilitation therapy with robotic aids can help stroke patients regain limb movement

Patients show modest yet meaningful gains in limb movement and an improved outlook on life years after suffering a stroke, a major clinical study has found. The paper, published online this week in the New England Journal of Medicine, provides the best evidence yet that stroke sufferers in a controlled study can regain limb movement long after an injury, through intensive therapy with specially trained personnel and newly created robotic aids.
