A stroke is a medical emergency. Strokes happen when blood flow to your brain stops. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. There are two kinds of stroke. The more common kind, called ischemic stroke, is caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain. The other kind, called hemorrhagic stroke, is caused by a blood vessel that breaks and bleeds into the brain. "Mini-strokes" or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), occur when the blood supply to the brain is briefly interrupted.

Increasing its ability to provide patients with the highest quality of care, Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta has installed the country’s first InfinixTM VF-i vascular X-ray system with the 12” x 12” mid-sized flat panel detector (FPD) from Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. The new mid-sized FPD system is equipped with Toshiba’s Next Generation Advanced Image Processing (AIP) capabilities and marks the fourth Toshiba Infinix-i system installed by Piedmont Hospital.

Eribis Pharmaceuticals AB - part of the Karolinska Development portfolio - announced today that it has received follow-on financial investment enabling the company to continue its clinical development program. Based on cardio-protective effects, Eribis' candidate drug has the potential to become an important new therapy for treating acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and reperfusion injury (damage to tissue caused when blood supply returns after a period of ischemia), as well as for surgical preconditioning. The new round of investment from Karolinska Development AB will allow Eribis to strengthen the preclinical material.

Osiris Therapeutics completes enrollment in Prochymal MSC therapy Phase II trial for type 1 diabetes

Osiris Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it has achieved a $750,000 milestone payment from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) for completing enrollment in a Phase II clinical trial evaluating Prochymal, an adult mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy, as a treatment for patients recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The milestone is the fourth in a series of payments resulting from JDRF’s partnership with Osiris for the development of a therapy for type 1 diabetes.
