New studies provide insight into treatments for Barrett's esophagus

The October issue of GIE: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy features several new studies evaluating various treatments for Barrett's esophagus (BE). Two of these studies are highlighted below. BE is a condition in which there are unusual changes to the cells lining the esophagus. It is believed to be most commonly due to inflammation from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Cancers linked to obesity account for 40% of all cancers in the US, report states

Being obese or overweight is linked to an increased risk of developing 13 types of cancer, according to the latest Vital Signs report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Cancer Institute. These cancers accounted for approximately 40% of all cancers diagnosed in the US, in 2014.

Prescription drug linked to marked slowing of stomach emptying and weight loss

Liraglutide injection, a prescription medication used to treat type-2 diabetes and obesity is associated with marked slowing of stomach emptying and is an effective weight loss therapy. These are the findings of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study by Mayo Clinic researchers published today in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology.

Researchers from BWH have uncovered a new genetic cause for erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a photosensitive blood disorder. In the past, the most well-known causes for EPP were two specific genetic disorders, but using an extended pedigree from France, the investigators found that EPP can also be caused by changes in another gene.

FDA grants approval for new biosimilar to treat multiple types of cancer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Mvasi (bevacizumab-awwb) as a biosimilar to Avastin (bevacizumab) for the treatment of multiple types of cancer. Mvasi is the first biosimilar approved in the U.S. for the treatment of cancer.

Energy drinks among youth paving way for cocaine addictions later finds new study

It has been found that one third of college going American students eventually end up becoming cocaine addicts or have abuse problems with alcohol or prescription medications. Further one third of all college going students between ages 21 and 24 are habitual consumers of energy drinks. A new study has linked these two behaviors and noted that students who take energy drinks on a regular basis are more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol as they grow up. The study was published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
