Global phase III study to provide novel extended release of topiramate

Data presented yesterday showed that USL255, a novel extended-release (ER) formulation of topiramate, was associated with less fluctuation in topiramate plasma levels than immediate-release (IR) topiramate in healthy volunteers.

Spherix announces results of D-tagatose Phase 3 trial for Type 2 diabetes

Spherix Incorporated, an innovator in biotechnology for therapy in diabetes, metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis; and providers of technical and regulatory consulting services to food, supplement, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, today announced results from its first Phase 3 trial post hoc analysis in which the higher body mass index (BMI) of the U.S. population relative to the Indian population was a likely key contributor to the more positive effects of D-tagatose in the lowering of HbA1c levels in the U.S. population. Initial results were announced on October 7.

Vitamin D supplementation may reduce risk of diabetes, heart disease: Research

Researchers from the UC Davis Health System have found that compared with healthy controls, blood levels of vitamin D are significantly reduced in patients in the Sacramento area with metabolic syndrome, a constellation of disease risk factors that affects about one in three U.S. adults and predisposes them to diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Oramed presents ORMD-0801 Phase IIb results for Type II diabetes at Annual Meeting in Bethesda

Oramed Pharmaceuticals Inc., a developer of oral drug delivery systems, presented the results of its recently completed Phase IIb trial. The multicenter, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind study conducted in 29 patients with Type II diabetes assessed the safety of ORMD-0801 in patients with Type II diabetes.

Arena and Eisai report positive results from lorcaserin BLOOM-DM trial in obese, overweight diabetics

Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Eisai Inc. reported today that top-line results from the one-year lorcaserin BLOOM-DM trial demonstrate statistically significant weight loss in obese and overweight patients with type 2 diabetes. In this trial, lorcaserin met all three co-primary efficacy endpoints. In addition, as described below, lorcaserin patients taking lorcaserin 10 mg twice daily (BID) achieved statistically significant improvements in multiple secondary endpoints, including HbA1c, as compared to patients randomized to placebo.

Phase III study suggests CYCLOSET tablets improve glycemic control

Santarus, Inc. and VeroScience LLC today announced that analyses of 379-patient subset data from a 3,070-patient Phase III safety study conducted with CYCLOSET (bromocriptine mesylate) tablets suggested that CYCLOSET as an add-on to oral antidiabetes drugs produced improvements in glycemic control irrespective of baseline duration of disease.

After receiving a priority review, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved SPRYCEL (dasatinib) 100 mg once daily for the treatment of adult patients with newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase.

Repros commences randomization in Androxal Phase II study in T2DM men with low testosterone

Repros Therapeutics Inc. today announced it has commenced randomization of subjects into its Phase II Androxal® study in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in men with low testosterone. Low testosterone and T2DM are co-morbid conditions in a significant number of men. The study is being conducted at nine sites across the US including both academic and private practices and will enroll up to 150 patients.
