A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. During a pandemic, transmission can be anticipated in the workplace, not only from patient to workers in health care settings, but also among co-workers in general work settings. A pandemic would cause high levels of illness, death, social disruption, and economic loss. Everyday life would be disrupted because so many people in so many places become seriously ill at the same time. Impacts could range from school and business closings to the interruption of basic services such as public transportation and food delivery.

Medco third quarter net revenue increases 10.3% to $16.3 billion

Medco Health Solutions, Inc. today reported record third-quarter 2010 GAAP diluted EPS of $0.85, up 23.2 percent compared to $0.69 for the third quarter of 2009. Adjusting for the amortization of intangible assets that existed when Medco became a publicly traded company in 2003, third-quarter 2010 diluted earnings per share increased 21.3 percent to a record $0.91, from $0.75 in the third quarter of 2009.

Telbivudine prevents HBV transmission from mothers to newborns: Study

Researchers studied the treatment of pregnant women with hepatitis B virus (HBV) with Telbivudine in their second to third trimesters. The study concluded that both the mothers benefited from treatment and no transmission of HBV to newborns was detected at 28 weeks postbirth.

Medicago receives Health Canada clearance for Phase II clinical trial of H5N1 Avian Influenza vaccine

Medicago Inc. a biotechnology company focused on developing highly effective and affordable vaccines based on proprietary manufacturing technologies and Virus-Like Particles (VLPs), today announced that it has received clearance from Health Canada to commence a Phase II human clinical trial with its H5N1 Avian Influenza vaccine ("H5N1 vaccine"). Enrolment of volunteers is now underway.

Flu deaths analyzed for future lessons

A new report has looked at all of England’s swine flu deaths in children under 18 during the 2009 pandemic. Researchers found that there was a higher risk of dying from the influenza A H1N1 strain of flu among certain groups of children, such as those with pre-existing conditions and those of a Pakistani or Bangladeshi background. However it was unclear why.

Long non-protein coding RNAs respond to SARS virus infection, says study

For the first time, scientists have discovered that a poorly understood class of RNA produced in a mammal's cells during a respiratory virus attack may affect the outcome of the infection. Their findings are reported today in mBio, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

H1N1 linked to increased rate of empyema in children

The H1N1 influenza pandemic has led to a sharp increase in the number of children with a serious "secondary" bacterial infection called empyema in children, suggests a study in the October issue of The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information and business intelligence for students, professionals, and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health, and pharmacy.

New research shows flu virus with D222G mutation can cause pneumonia

A variant of last year's pandemic influenza linked to fatal cases carried a mutation that enabled it to infect a different subset of cells lining the airway, according to new research. The study, due to be published next week in the Journal of Virology, suggests that the mutant virus could have impaired the lungs' ability to clear out germs.

Gilead Sciences, Inc. announced today its results of operations for the quarter ended September 30, 2010. Total revenues for the third quarter of 2010 were $1.94 billion, up 8 percent compared to total revenues of $1.80 billion for the third quarter of 2009. Net income for the third quarter of 2010 was $704.9 million, or $0.83 per diluted share, compared to net income for the third quarter of 2009 of $673.0 million, or $0.72 per diluted share.
