New perfusion CT algorithms maintain image quality at half of the radiation dose

In recent years, advances in CT scanner technology have made perfusion computed tomography (CT) imaging an important diagnostic tool for patients with suspected stroke. Now, researchers at Mayo Clinic are working to reduce radiation dosages used to acquire perfusion and other CT images. Mayo Clinic medical physicist Cynthia McCollough, Ph.D., and her group of researchers presented their findings related to CT dose reduction at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine on July 20 in Philadelphia.

Number of Cyberchondriacs increase to 175 million: 2010 Harris Poll

The latest Harris Poll, measuring how many people use the Internet to look for information about health topics, finds that the numbers continue to increase. The Harris Poll first used the word Cyberchondriacs to describe these people in 1998, when just over 50 million American adults had ever gone online to look for health information. By 2005, that number had risen to 117 million. In the new poll, the number of Cyberchondriacs has jumped to 175 million from 154 million last year, possibly as a result of the health care reform debate.

TSO3 Inc. an innovator in sterilization technology for medical devices in healthcare settings using ozone, posted revenues of $494,353 for the sales of new generation sterilizers (STERIZONE(R) 125L+ / 3M(TM) Optreoz(TM) 125-Z), accessories and service contracts. This compares to $510,626 for the same period in 2009, representing the sale of two of the first generation ozone sterilizers (125L), accessories and service contracts, as well as a large installation contract.

NCI panel recommends Celsion's Phase III ThermoDox HEAT Study as Priority Clinical Trial for HCC

Celsion Corporation announced today that the consensus recommendations of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Clinical Trials Planning Meeting (CTPM) for Hepatocellular Carcinoma have been released and published in the August 2010 issue of Journal of Clinical Oncology, the official publication of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). In addition to evaluating the current standard of care, the NCI panel also recommended Celsion's Phase III ThermoDox ® HEAT Study as a Priority Clinical Trial for HCC.

STAAR Surgical second-quarter total net revenue increases 3.7% to $13.6 million

STAAR Surgical Company, a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of minimally invasive ophthalmic products, today reported results for the second quarter ended July 2, 2010. Revenue for the period grew 3.7% to $13.6 million with the revenue from core products, IOLs and ICLs, increasing by 7%. For the first half of 2010 core product revenues increased by 11% reflecting market share gains by STAAR.
