Mylan licenses rights to produce and market generic versions of Gilead HIV/AIDS therapies

Mylan Inc. today announced the establishment of a new agreement between its subsidiary Mylan Laboratories Limited and Gilead Sciences Inc. Under this agreement, Mylan has licensed the rights to produce and market generic versions of Gilead HIV/AIDS therapies containing Emtricitabine, including single and fixed-dose combinations.

Clinton tours health center in Senegal's capital on first stop of 10-day Africa trip

On the first stop of a 10-day tour of Africa, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stopped at the Phillipe Maguilen Senghor Health Center in Dakar, Senegal, where Awa Marie Coll-Seck, the country's Minister of Health, "explained to Secretary Clinton how these operational centers dramatically improve maternal and child health," according to a post in USAID's "IMPACTblog."

Partners in health reports on efforts to curb Haiti's cholera epidemic using oral vaccinations

Researchers report one-third cut in the rate of lethal SSIs after colorectal operations

A patient safety team including researchers in the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality reported a one-third cut in the rate of costly and potentially lethal surgical site infections (SSIs) following colorectal operations after requiring use of a simple safety checklist and urging caregivers to speak up if they see potentially unsafe practices.

SPECT/CT with 99mTc-HMPAO-WBC can improve diagnosis of infectious endocarditis

When combined with standard diagnostic tests, functional imaging procedures have been shown to reduce the rate of misdiagnosed cases of infectious endocarditis. According to new research published in the August issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography (CT) with 99mTc-hexamethylpropleneamine oxime-labeled white blood cells (99mTc-HMPAO-WBC) can improve the diagnosis of infectious endocarditis in hard-to-diagnose cases.
