The 15,000 square foot CPHA Centenary EXPO titled This is Public Health features a dynamic display of visuals that highlights the importance of public health and its fundamental impact on the health of Canadians over the last 100 years.

Gallup-Healthways U.S. Well-Being Report for May 2010

Please be advised that Gallup and Healthways, Inc. today released the Gallup-Healthways Monthly U.S. Well-Being Report for May 2010. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index measurement of U.S. well-being reached 67.4 in May, surpassing the record of 67.0 documented last month and in August of 2009. The record high WBI score in consecutive months suggests ongoing recovery of American well-being despite challenges such as high unemployment.

Videoconferencing experience enriches nursing home residents' lives: Study

34 residents from ten nursing homes took part in the videoconferencing study - the 18 women and 16 men had an average age of 75. All of them said the experience enriched their lives, just under two-thirds said it was the second-best option to family visiting and a third said it gave them a true picture of family life. The benefits were considerable and could easily be replicated in a wide range of residential care settings, say the authors.

Majority of physicians, members oppose AMA's position on health care coverage expansions

Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have found that the majority of physicians and members of the American Medical Association (AMA) opposed the AMA's position on coverage expansions--the most contentious issue in the recent health care reform debate. The data are published in a letter in the June 9th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Study reveals insurance related differences in hospital mortality for AMI, stroke, pneumonia

An analysis of over 150,000 hospital discharges has revealed that there are significant insurance related differences in hospital mortality, length of stay, and costs among working-age Americans (age 18-64 years) hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), stroke, or pneumonia. These three conditions are among the leading causes of non-cancer in-patient deaths in patients under 65 years old. The analysis is published today in the Journal of Hospital Medicine.

Number of Medicare patients transferred to long-term acute care hospital after critical illness tripled: JAMA

From 1997 to 2006, the number of long-term acute care hospitals doubled, the number of Medicare patients who were transferred to a long-term acute care hospital after a critical illness tripled, and the 1 year survival for these patients was poor, according to a study in the June 9 issue of JAMA.
