In one of the first moves the Obama administration has taken under the new health care reform law, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Friday sent a letter to state governors and insurance commissioners intended to gauge interest in a new insurance high-risk pool program.

WCU: Dental Hygiene Clinic to offer free dental hygiene services at Anaheim campus

West Coast University has announced that the Dental Hygiene Clinic at its Anaheim campus will offer the public free dental hygiene services ranging from oral inspection and risk assessment, to digital and traditional imaging (X-rays), to preventative therapies and non-surgical periodontal therapy (cleanings).

National Children's Museum chosen to participate in 2010 White House Easter Egg Roll

The National Children's Museum has been selected for the second consecutive year to participate in the White House Easter Egg Roll, a 132-year-old event designed to encourage children and families to come outdoors and celebrate the start of the spring season. The Museum will present an array of activities and programming related to this year's theme of "Ready, Set, Go!" promoting health and wellness at the White House on Monday, April 5.

GHRI announces $3.5M funding to strengthen health systems in sub-Saharan Africa

The Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI) announced today $3.5 million in funding to support ten African-led research teams who will look for innovative ways to strengthen health systems in sub-Saharan Africa. The teams will be led jointly by an African researcher and an African decision-maker and will involve several Canadian researchers.

Wall Street Journal examines railway hospital in India

The Wall Street Journal examines Lifeline Express, "the world's first hospital on rails," which is run by Impact India, a group that "initially focused on immunization and prevention of diseases such as polio and malaria." Its success has spread to China and Zimbabwe, where three Lifeline Express trains are operated, and to "hospital river boats based on the India model have been set up to tend to patients in Bangladesh and Cambodia." It has also been used as a model for other health projects in India, according to the newspaper.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today issued a letter to governors and independent insurance commissioners asking each state to express their interest in participating in the temporary high-risk pool program established by the new health insurance reform law. States were provided a number of options for participation including building upon existing state high-risk pools.

Student hygiene education programs can help reduce school absenteeism

Inadequate access to safe water and poor sanitation infrastructure contribute to an estimated 1.87 million deaths per year from devastating diarrheal diseases, mostly among children less than five years of age in the developing world. But, according to a new study released in the April issue of the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, school-based student hygiene education programs can impact behavior in the home and significantly reduce absenteeism amongst students.

NPCs as effective as doctors in performing Caesarean sections

Every year, some 7.5 million mothers and new-borns die during pregnancy or childbirth, almost all of whom are in low and middle-income countries. One reason for this is the lack of trained medical staff, particularly doctors. A doctoral thesis from Karolinska Institutet now shows that a solution could be the training of nurses in caesarean sections and other life-saving surgery.

Detroit cancer center to conduct free oral, head and neck cancer screenings

On Friday, April 16, from 2 - 5 p.m., the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit will be conducting free oral, head and neck cancer screenings in conjunction with National Oral Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week (April 12 – 18.) Some of the symptoms of oral cancer go unnoticed. A simple 10-minute screening exam can determine if there are problems and can help diagnose this disease in its early stage.

Temporary high risk health insurance pool program: HHS requests expression of states' interest in participation

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today issued a letter to governors and independent insurance commissioners asking each state to express their interest in participating in the temporary high risk pool program established by the new health insurance reform law. The temporary high risk pool program was created to help provide coverage to people who are uninsured because of pre-existing conditions. States may choose whether and how they participate in the program.

TJUH physician first recipient of Emergency Department Director of the Year award

Rex G. Mathew, M.D., F.A.C.E.P., vice president of Emergency Medicine Clinical Operations at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) has been named the Emergency Department Director of the Year by the Emergency Medicine Foundation and Blue Jay Consulting.
