KemPharm receives patent for LAT prodrug technology for Attention Deficit – Hyperactivity Disorder treatment

KemPharm, Inc. announced today that it has received a Notice of Issuance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its patent application entitled "Polar Hydrophilic Prodrugs of Amphetamine and Other Stimulants and Processes for Making and Using the Same", U.S. Patent No. 7,772,222. Green Cross receives KFDA approval to manufacture, market i.v. peramivir: BioCryst Pharmaceuticals

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that its partner, Green Cross Corporation has received marketing and manufacturing approval from KFDA for intravenous peramivir to treat patients with influenza A & B viruses, including pandemic H1N1 and avian influenza. Green Cross Corp. intends to launch peramivir under the commercial name PeramiFlu in South Korea.

Genentech asserts SPC non-infringement of products in Europe, seeks response from PDL

R-Tech Ueno, Sucampo Pharmaceuticals request arbitration against Takeda Pharmaceutical

R-Tech Ueno supplies Amitiza (TM) Capsules to Takeda pursuant to agreements with Takeda and Sucampo. On March 12, 2010, Sucampo submitted for filing with the International Court of Arbitration, International Chamber of Commerce, a Request for Arbitration against Takeda. In that Request, Sucampo claimed that Takeda has violated the provisions of the October 29, 2004, Collaboration and License Agreement between Sucampo and Takeda and other applicable duties, and that Takeda's violations have injured Sucampo. Sucampo requested all appropriate relief, including termination of the agreements, damages remedy and so on.

Watson to launch ella emergency contraceptive in fourth-quarter 2010

Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced that it intends to launch ella® (ulipristal acetate), a novel oral emergency contraceptive, in the fourth quarter of 2010. When a certain protein is mutated or missing, symptoms of the neurodevelopmental disorder Rett syndrome arise, causing a gradual loss of brain function during early development.This fact led Duke University Medical Center researchers to test a theory that the protein might also contribute to nerve-cell connection (synapse) changes in a fully formed adult mouse brain when exposed to psychostimulant use.

HRA Pharma announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval for ella(R) (ulipristal acetate) as a prescription-only emergency contraceptive indicated for use within 120 hours (five days) of unprotected intercourse or a known or suspected contraceptive failure. ella is not intended for routine use as a contraceptive.

Daily dose of aspirin may reduce prostate cancer risk: US Study

A US study has found that a daily dose of aspirin may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, but Cancer Research UK has noted that regular use of aspirin can cause serious side-effects and should not be undertaken unless recommended by a doctor.Several previous studies have looked at the possibility of an association between aspirin use and a reduced risk of prostate cancer.In the latest study, scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, led by Dr Janet Stanford, looked at data on 1,001 prostate cancer patients and a similar number of cancer-free volunteers.

Lamictal can cause aseptic meningitis: FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned that the drug Lamictal (lamotrigine), approved to treat seizures and bipolar disorder, can cause aseptic meningitis, an inflammation of the protective membranes (meninges) that cover the brain and spinal cord not caused by bacterial infection.The agency is working with the drug's manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, to update the prescribing information and patient medication guide to include this risk.
