60 minutes of moderate-intensity activity needed to maintain normal weight: Study

Among women consuming a usual diet, physical activity was associated with less weight gain over 13 years only among women of normal weight, according to a study in the March 24/31 issue of JAMA. The researchers also found that women successful in maintaining normal weight averaged approximately 60 minutes a day of moderate-intensity activity throughout the study.

Caesarean births jump over 70%

There was a time when a C-Section caused both doctors and pregnant mothers’ anxiety, but not anymore. If the current trends are anything to go by more women are opting for a voluntary Caesarean baby than ever before. They have risen from 53% since 1996 to 2007. This is considerably higher than the figures for 1994 to 1998 which are at 21%.

Breathing diesel exhaust during pregnancy is associated with sluggishness in offspring. Researchers writing in BioMed Central's open access journal Particle and Fibre Toxicology studied the effects of pollution exposure in mice, finding that the offspring of mothers who breathed diesel fumes while pregnant were less likely to show spontaneous movement.

Advaxis' ADXS11-001 Phase 1 study for cervix cancer failures: 13.3% of treated patients alive at over 3 years

Ongoing follow up of the surviving patients from the phase I study of ADXS11-001 for the treatment of cervix cancer failures conducted by Advaxis, Inc.,, the live, attenuated Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) immunotherapy company, has shown that two of fifteen treated patients or 13.3% are still alive 1,248 and 1,128 days after receiving their initial dose.
