In the House, Democrats opposed to abortion threaten reform bill

Some House Democrats opposed to abortion are threatening to thwart health care reform legislation if it does not clearly steer away from funding abortions. Congress Daily reports: "With Republicans likely to try to use the emotional issue to draw support and money for 2010 contests, Democrats tried to make the bill 'abortion neutral' -- maintaining existing federal policy without further restricting abortion rights.

Rates of binge eating among adult women identical across race but not among college age women

Existing research shows that rates of binge eating among adult women is virtually identical across race. However, among college age women, it's a different story: Caucasian women are more apt to exhibit binge eating behaviors than African American women, according to a study presented at this month's annual scientific meeting of the Obesity Society.

Despite majorities expressing concern about getting the novel H1N1 (or swine) flu this year, only about one in four pregnant women or new mothers plan to get the H1N1 flu shot, according to findings from a new survey conducted on behalf of HealthyWomen by Harris Interactive.

Combination treatement for IVF patients may eliminate vaginal bleeding

A prospective, multi-center study demonstrated that in IVF (in vitro fertilization) cycles supplemented with once-daily dosing of Crinone® vaginal progesterone gel and Estrace® oral estrogen, vaginal bleeding is rare in patients who become pregnant. Bleeding does occur in approximately one-quarter of patients who do not become pregnant. These data were presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) annual meeting in Atlanta.

The Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) has joined forces with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) and the Society of Canadian Colposcopists (SCC) to launch this year's Pap test campaign during Cervical Cancer Awareness Week. Together, we hope to increase the scope, reach and impact of the campaign. With this collaborative effort, we aim to provide more Pap tests and deal with abnormal results in a more expeditious manner.

More than half of women in the United States are overweight or obese when they become pregnant, and most go on to gain more than the recommended amount during pregnancy. The excess weight can lead to a myriad of complications, including preeclampsia, diabetes, bigger babies, C-sections, birth injuries, and weight retention after pregnancy.
