New drug combo promises help for triple negative breast cancer patients

A new preclinical study on triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) reports that an experimental polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) inhibitor shrank tumor four times more powerfully when used along with standard drugs than alone. The study, reported in the journal PLOS ONE, opens up a new door of opportunity for patients with this disease.

Experimental Alzheimer’s drugs show promise

Researchers from Salk have found that two experimental drugs named CMS121 and J147 may improve memory functions and reduce the progression of memory decline and brain degeneration in mice models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The researchers published their work in the latest issue of the journal eLife. The study was titled, “Elevating acetyl-CoA levels reduces aspects of brain aging.”

Addictions and drug interactions common among patients not disclosing their medication history

Some patients skip telling their doctors about the drugs and medications they are consuming. A new study shows that these patients are at a greater risk of unpleasant and sometimes dangerous drug-drug interactions as well as addictions. The study was published in the latest issue of The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. The study is titled, “Role of opioid-involved drug interactions in chronic pain management”.

Light to moderate lifetime alcohol use raises cancer risk

There have been conflicting reports on health benefits and harm caused by drinking alcohol. A new study from Japanese researchers has proven that taking one drink a day for a decade or two drinks for five years can raise the risk of getting cancers by 5 percent. The study titled “Light to moderate amount of lifetime alcohol consumption and risk of cancer in Japan,” was published in the latest issue of the journal Cancer.

Researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center today reported study results showing the addition of tucatinib to capecitabine (Xeloda) and trastuzumab (Herceptin) significantly improved progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with advanced HER2-positive breast cancer, with and without brain metastasis according to results of the HER2CLIMB clinical trial.
