Life spans of the women in the USA are improving at a slower pace than men's and are shorter in many U.S. counties than they were 20 years ago, according to a report released last Thursday.

Cosmetic contact lens on the rise among Malaysians

Malaysia’s beauty contact lens market is fast catching up with developed countries in the region such as Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea, which are all exhibiting similar upward trending in the sales of these beauty accessories. GfK retail tracking reported Malaysians spending a total of nearly USD 55 million on contact lenses in 2011, of which 28 percent was contributed by the beauty segment.

Phytochemicals in mangos may target breast cancer cells

Already one of the world's most popular fruits, scientists are discovering that mangos may also be one of the healthiest. New research, presented this week at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) meeting in San Diego, not only suggests people who eat mangos have a better diet, but the fruit also contains a substance that may have an effect on breast cancer cell proliferation.

Fun ways for women to get active with 100,000 Acts of Play Challenge

A new survey from the American Cancer Society finds women are 10 percent less likely than men to make time for physical activities they enjoy and that 40 percent of women said they would be more physically active in their free time if it felt less like work and more like play. As a result, the American Cancer Society Choose You movement is calling on women to help close this gap and to discover fun ways to get active with its 100,000 Acts of Play Challenge.

Chemotherapy, radiation affect cognitive function of women with breast cancer

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the University of South Florida and University of Kentucky have found that breast cancer survivors who have had chemotherapy, radiation or both do not perform as well on some cognitive tests as women who have not had cancer.

In a Huffington Post "Global Motherhood" opinion piece, UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin writes, "It warms my heart to see that safe motherhood and women's reproductive health are finally being recognized as important development issues," but "millions of women in developing countries still lack even the most basic care during pregnancy," leading to maternal death and injury and hundreds of millions of women lack access to family planning services, including modern contraceptives.
