Purdue researchers develop products and processes to improve detection, treatment of diabetes

Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, is the result of the breakdown of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes can be the result of a combination of obesity, high caloric intake and a sedentary lifestyle.

MIPT researchers patent graphene biosensors that may accelerate development of novel drugs

The US Patent Office has recently published the patent application (no. US 2015/0301039), which was filed by the MIPT in May this year and is titled Biological Sensor and a Method of the Production of Biological Sensor. In Russia, this development is already protected by the patent No. 2527699 with a priority date of February 20, 2013. The key feature of the sensor is the use of a linking layer for biomolecule immobilization comprising a thin film of graphene or graphene oxide.

Novel graphene oxide-based biosensor may speed up development of new drugs against HIV, cancer

Longing to find a cure for cancer, HIV and other yet incurable diseases, researchers have already tried out hundreds of drugs, each requiring preclinical and clinical testing with live subjects. How many chemical agents more to try? Moving at such rate, will we find the cure during our lifetime? One of the easiest ways to speed up the drug development process is to simply perform it outside of the living body (e.g., by watching the substances react with the smallest pieces of live tissue and thus quickly predicting the overall effect it will make to the body when inside).
