UNMCC receives NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation for cancer treatment, research programs

The University of New Mexico Cancer Center has been awarded the highest designation and rating in the United States for cancer treatment and research programs. It has received the National Cancer Institute's "NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center" designation, identifying it as one of the leading cancer centers in the nation and the only such cancer center in New Mexico.

Researchers have shown that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect the earliest signs of breast cancer recurrence and fast-growing tumors. Their approach detects micromestastases, breakaway tumor cells with the potential to develop into dangerous secondary breast cancer tumors elsewhere in the body.

EORTC study: Irradiation of regional nodes in breast cancer patients has marginal effect on overall survival

At a median follow-up of 10.9 years, an EORTC study has shown that irradiation of regional nodes in patients with stage I, II, or III breast cancer has a marginal effect on overall survival, the primary endpoint (at 10 years, overall survival was 82.3 % for regional irradiation versus 80.7% for no regional irradiation, (HR=0.87 (95%CI: 0.76, 1.00), p=0.06).

(Headquarters: San Diego, California, President and CEO: Dr. Helen Torley) have signed a clinical collaboration agreement to evaluate Eisai's agent eribulin mesylate (brand name: Halaven, "eribulin") in combination with Halozyme's investigational drug PEGPH20 (PEGylated recombinant human hyaluronidase) in first line HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer.
