Digital tomosynthesis improves cancer detection in women with dense breasts

A major new study being presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) has found that digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography, has the potential to significantly increase the cancer detection rate in mammography screening of women with dense breasts.

Endomagnetics gets FDA's IDE approval to begin clinical trial of SentiMag and Sienna+ system

Cancer healthcare company Endomagnetics announced today that it has received Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration to initiate a pivotal clinical trial to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the SentiMag and Sienna+ magnetic sentinel lymph node biopsy system in the management of breast cancer.

CCR5 receptor plays key role in driving prostate cancer metastases

Although prostate cancer can be successfully treated in many men, when the disease metastasizes to the bone, it is eventually lethal. In a study published online December 1st in the journal Cancer Research, researchers show that the receptor CCR5 best known for its role in HIV therapy, may also be involved in driving the spread of prostate cancer to the bone.

New vaccine shows promise in patients with metastatic breast cancer

A breast cancer vaccine developed at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is safe in patients with metastatic breast cancer, results of an early clinical trial indicate. Preliminary evidence also suggests that the vaccine primed the patients' immune systems to attack tumor cells and helped slow the cancer's progression.

Study finds striking gap in cancer survival between countries and regions

The CONCORD-2 study, published in The Lancet, reports 5-year survival estimates for 25·7 million cancer patients diagnosed with one of 10 common cancers and 75 000 children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia between 1995 and 2009, using individual patient data from 279 cancer registries in 67 countries.

Researchers from Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah discovered the unusual role of lactate in the metabolism of alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS), a rare, aggressive cancer that primarily affects adolescents and young adults. The study also confirmed that a fusion gene is the cancer-causing agent in this disease.
