Hydroxytyrosol in olive oil may help reduce risk of breast cancer

A major component of olive oil, hydroxytyrosol, is the subject of a Houston Methodist study of women who are at increased risk of developing breast cancer. The study focuses on the changes in breast density after one year of treatment and is the first of its kind in the United States.

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation announced that six scientists with novel approaches to fighting cancer have been named 2014 recipients of the Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award. The grant of $450,000 over three years is awarded each year to early career scientists whose projects have the potential to significantly impact the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

First patient dosed in ADXS-HPV Phase 1/2 study for HPV-associated head and neck cancer

Advaxis, Inc., a leader in developing the next generation of cancer immunotherapies, announced that the first patient has been dosed in a Phase 1/2 "window of opportunity" study being conducted by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Patients diagnosed with HPV-associated head and neck cancer will receive ADXS-HPV immunotherapy during the "window" of time between initial diagnosis and minimally invasive transoral robotic surgery to remove their tumors.

EBCC-9: Most exciting breast cancer conference in Europe

The most exciting breast cancer conference in Europe, it is the only one that involves all the major players in breast cancer. The University of Louisville is one of nine pilot sites selected by the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation for its newly established Care Center Network and the PFF Patient Registry program. Rafael Perez, M.D., director of the UofL Interstitial Lung Disease program in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Disorders Medicine, will lead the UofL site.

Research findings could lead to life-saving treatments to fight tumor metastasis

A team of researchers from the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve School of Medicine have identified critical complex mechanisms involved in the metastasis of deadly "triple negative" breast cancers. These tumors are extremely difficult to treat, frequently return after remission, and are the most aggressive form of breast cancer in women. The discovery of this critical interaction of mechanisms could be used to develop new life saving treatments to kill metastatic tumors in TNBC.

Research led by the Translational Genomics Group at Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) in Barcelona has not only shown that HER2+ breast cancer can be classified into four different subtypes, but also unmasked a subtype showing both a greater response to and increased benefit from chemotherapy and anti-HER2 therapy.

Since the enactment of the National Cancer Act in 1971, the U.S. has spent hundreds of billions of dollars in cancer research and treatment. And yet, the cancer mortality rate-the historic benchmark of progress-has only declined modestly while the mortality rates of other leading causes of death have declined substantially.
